Been watching enemy at the door, an old TV show about the German occupation of the Channel Islands. The senior German officer has a full beard. He doesn't seem to be a naval officer.

Could German officers have beards during WW2 or is this just TV artistic license?

Sorry for bug

Mountain troops could, but it could be no longer than 5 centimeters if I remember correctly.
EDIT: Sorry, 2 cm in length.

If he is the senior officer, who would dare to tell him to mind the regulations.

I wouldn't mind watching that… really enjoyed Island At War (2004) on much the same topic.

Submariners, definitely. Probably other naval officers as well, since it takes fresh water to shave (trust me, you do NOT want to shave using salt water. ouch!)

Can't say I've ever seen any German Army officers with a beard, except maybe a short one in the desert.

A simple google image search reveals loads of them, including Major General Theodor Scherer presenting an iron cross while sporting a neatly trimmed beard.

This guy's beard is about 2cm max. So it seems to fit the regulations.

Enemy at the Door is on youtube – 2 full series worth.

The quality is poor but adequate to follow the story. Got a lot of old stalwarts as guest stars. Enjoyable but not as good as Secret Army, IMO.

Thanks for clearing that up anyway. I watch without rancour now.

Secret Army is still a great watch.

I just watched all 3 series. Never saw it at the time. It is good. Even for the time they got a lot of stuff right.
