The local group is trying out a new set of rules and I have the bug to paint "Ancients" again. I've always wanted a Scots Isles and Highlands army. (heavy on the Isles part) What are my options for decent looking 15mm Islemen? I was going to use the old Feudal Castings range, but the current seller of those figures (Sgt Major Miniatures) seems to have gone out of business.
What are some other options for an Early Medieval era Isleman? |

Splintered Light does not have an Isles & Highlanders range, IIRC, but they have LOTS of figs that would suit that army perfectly. |

Total System Scenics (QRF) seem to have at least some of the Feudal Casting's Feudal Scots in their catalog as new offerings…which makes me wonder if they got the moulds back from Sgt. Major? Not sure about the other FC ranges including Islemen, but their news page says "There are more Feudal Scots on the way." Link at: link |

Personally, I really like the Essex figures – I used them for Scots axemen..

Can we get Thistle and Rose again? I hadn't heard they were back in production… I built this army for DBM back in the 90s. For the heavy infantry I mixed a lot of Essex Islemen/Galloglaich (MER21, 22, 32, 33, 34, 35) with Essex generic early Medieval figures in various types of poor/no armor with spears and swords and axes, mostly with round shields, some shieldless, some heater shields thrown in for variety. They're a very chaotic-looking bunch. For the Highland archers I used Essex generic early Feudal/Medieval unarmored archers, and a bunch of Thistle and Rose figures for the Galwegians. As mentioned, the QRF/TSS Feudal Scots have some good poses, and you can shop Donnington and Black Hat figures for more. - Ix |

Depends when your army is set. If you want an army for the Wars of Independence there's nothing to indicate that Highland/island troops were any different to lowland or English troops. |

Earlier periods can use selected late Vikings. Mail coats and axes didn't change that much. |

T&R are not in production yet…but you can keep tabs on their status on their Facebook page. link |

That's pretty much what I assumed too, except I also assumed "poor" and "lots of axes". As if on cue, TSS just expanded the range of Fuedal Scots, by quite a bit. - Ix |

Wow, that's really sad that Sgt Major Miniatures went out of business. I have a massive Scots Common army with their figures, really lovely sculpts. Hopefully someone picks up the casts. |

Yellow…there's really nothing to suggest they were any different at all. The 'poor' bit is probably irrelevant other than perhaps for locals defending them, selves against raids. Like anywhere else the men with personal service obligations (like the ones that crewed birlinns) were relatively well-off..or at least wealthy enough to have decent kit. |
