Anyone recommend rules for this period in 28mm scale other than BLB? I quite lite BLB but my potential opponents aren't at all enthusiastic so looking for something else. Looking at maybe 10 units a side to start with if that helps.
Thanks

You could try Might and Reason (with the free Sun King module available on the Honour website). Each unit is a brigade.

You could use "Twilight of the Sunking", available from Pike and Shot Society. It uses " base widths" as unit of measurement for movement, firing etc. I have played it with 2mm, 6mm, 10 mm, 15 mm and 28 mm. Although really designed for bigger battles ( think Neerwinden, Blenheim etc), I have played it with armies of the size you suggest. We usually play with one unit (2 bases) representing a brigade, but it can be played at regimental level if recreating a smaller battle.
One of the things I like about TotSK is that there is no calculation of firing or melee. Instead, units have to take morale checks if in a position where they are being fired on or attacked. Morale mechanism is to throw two dice (in the version I use, 2 average dice, but revising author has trialled it with 2 x d6). Various factors, such as presence of rear supports, additional enemy atacking etc will then be added to or subtracted from the dice score. If score is 8 or more, unit stands, if lower it gets a marker. Generally infantry units break if they get three markers, cavalry with two. (a score of 4, 3 with d6) leads to an immediate break.
Most players pick up the game within a couple of moves and games of the size you are planning can be played out in a couple of hours plus set up time. Bigger battles take a bit longer- Ramillies was a full 5 hours and Neerwinden took around 7 hours of playing timebut there were over 80 brigades on the table for that one.

Thanks for the replies chaps. Looks like I may be doing this project on my own now which gives me the freedom to choose BLB if I want. However. It would need to be at 6mm or 10 mm scale and wondered whether anyone else had played at either scale and how you are getting on?

HI I use the Captain General Rules also from the Pike and Shot Society. i use 5mm and 10mm. i have tried various but these are written to capture the flavor of the period and you do really feel the difficulty of manuever. The order system is fantastic and really makes you think about how you use your troops, changing order is a pain.
