I was going to watch it … But PBS has a series about the Vietnam War, by Ken Burns. So I watched that. Much better that ST 6.0 AFAIK.

Besides … if I want to watch the rest of ST Discovery shows … I have to pay for it, IIRC. So Frakk'm ! evil grin

2, obviously.

Won't retread my review.

But on a note, I agree with the criticism regarding the failure of the design team to embrace the look of TOS and develop a reasonable transition, both in uniform and ship design.

First, uniforms: move from the single color ST:E jumpsuit to a jumpsuit or tunic or shirt/pant or skirt combo that begins to bring in the color divisions in TOS, TNG, and DS9. Hint at the Pike era turtlenecks.

Second: Ship. Time to transition the outer hull away from shiny metal towards the TOS era gray/off-white look.

Bridge: make it smaller, more cramped, but getting at the layout and colors/lighting of TOS. Either try to recreate TOS as a touch screen environment, or go with the reality that physical buttons and switches are actually more durable and easier to repair/replace than touch screens, especially in a situation with a high risk of damage combined with vast distances between points of supply or refit. (The war could teach everyone that bulky but sturdy beats sleek but fragile when survival is on the line.)

Oh well. What might have been…

Actually, "Queen of Outer Space" had colored uniform designs that could of been used. The guards were red skirts.
In it the humans seem to have the standard uniform left over from Forbidden Planet.
I thought the NG uniforms were poor fitting as everyone that stood up had to pull down their shirt.

But they could raise their hands to surrender.

The infamous Picard Maneuver…

Sigh.

2.) though as a North American viewer we only get the first half of the pilot for free and I REALLY don't like reviewing something without viewing it end to end.
Based on what I saw it just isn't enough to make me shell out money for it.

I wish them well, hope it gets good for the people who do keep up with it but as one of the fans who has been keeping this cash cow going since it was cancelled in the 1960s I'll pass and have more dvd space for the Ken Burns Vietnam documentary.

How about never ever going to watch this piece of junk.

It has only one goal and someone above has already cover what that goal is.

2. The characters were bland. hollow. There was nothing new or original to justify it. I saw the first two episodes. The second was no better than the first. I love good sci-fi. I've been watching space operas since the late 50s when I was a kid. Like many of us of a certain age, I've seen some great stuff, some okay stuff, and some duds. What makes the better kind of sci-fi is a blend of good stories and engaging characters. Let's be blunt. The Original Series and its special effects may be hokey by today's standards, but it is still good sci-fi because of the stories, plots and characters. Ditto for Star Wars, Farscape, DS9, Next Gen, Firefly and Enterprise. But Discovery is like drinking soda that's gone flat.

Just checked and it hasn't aired yet in my neck of the woods. Well darn I thought it was going to be on CBS. I probably will not shell out cash just to get mad and upset. Starfleet changes uniforms so often, I wouldn't want to be a Star Fleet supply officer.

Watch it and I don't know what to think. It is not like it sucked. I didn't get bored. On the other hand, there are several plot holes that irked me: why send alone the First Officer in an exploration mission? Why the Captain didn't arrest inmediately her Exec after she defied her in front of the whole bridge? In any navy worth its salt she would have been sent to the brig in no time! And finally, who had the bright idea of sending the Captain and the Exec alone in a mission that could have left them stranded on a planet and with the ship under the command of the Science Officer?!! It doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

I don't mind uniform changes or design changes in species. But giant plot holes make me cringe.

I would think it is not really star trek until there is a character/actor from another making an appearance.

The last films sucked, but at least it was another universe, I'm sure many of them suck equally.

Norrins29 Sep 2017 1:58 a.m. PST

Well it wasn't the total disaster I feared. Seems more of a reimagining than a prequel though.

My initial thoughts were –

Why change the look of the Klingons?
Are the Narn supplying the Klingons with ships now?
How come the Klingons can cloak?
The Starfleet ship design had more in common with the movies than the original series.
Really footprints in the sand as a marker???

I'll give it a bit more time once the Discovery actually turns up!

Stargate, SG1 was immensely popular,

I liked all 3 series … Sf-Fy should show those again instead of much of the drivel they do now …

Captain Gideon30 Sep 2017 7:59 a.m. PST

I didn't think much of Stargate now Babylon 5 that was a very good show.

Howler30 Sep 2017 11:27 a.m. PST

Didn't watch it and won't watch it

chromedog04 Oct 2017 2:26 p.m. PST

It was better than Voyager and the first three seasons of enterprise.

Also better than Nemesis.

Not quite as good as S6 DS9 (first 3-4 seasons were pretty ropey).

And it's not like Trek on TV has been any good in years. Enterprise has been gone for 11+ years.

Now remember Star Fleet is not a military organization, even though everyone has ranks and they wear uniforms.

Oh and carry weapons.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2017 12:46 p.m. PST

Good point ! I liked in the ST series "Enterprise". They had the equivalent to Marines/Soldiers on board, called MACOs. link
It has to be clear even to the PC, etc., types. Not every alien race you come across are going to be nice guys !

Mobius06 Oct 2017 4:42 p.m. PST

Now remember Star Fleet is not a military organization, even though everyone has ranks and they wear uniforms.

Like a police force or boy scouts only with it's own justice system outside the civil courts. Like the military. Able to meet out even the harshest penalties without the need for a jury of one's peers.

Chapter 3… I still like it… (smile)
