When it comes to miniature wargaming, are you mostly focused on the Ancients period? |
Sobieski | 23 Sep 2017 4:30 p.m. PST |
No. But certainly do a lot of it. |

I'd like to try Dark Age/Medieval but the Celts fought so many folk I've got years before I run out of enemies. |

Yes. I really like the battles between Successor kingdoms. Dark age battles too |

Not anymore. I was for many years and DBA was my game, through 2.2 that is. DBA 3.0 came along and destroyed it for me. Checked out ADLG, To the Stongest and Triumph. I have some interest in Saga as well, but it's popularity seems to have waned. I might go with Triumph, but those glorious days of large ancients tournaments and events from coast to coast seem to be a distant memory now. |

Not for 30 years. Horse and musket era for me! |

The Beast Rampant | 23 Sep 2017 6:18 p.m. PST |
No. I have interest in gaming ancients, entertained notions of gaming it for years. But it is too far down the list. The Dark Age is "ancients"? |
etotheipi | 23 Sep 2017 6:55 p.m. PST |
Majority or plurality? No majority genre. Plurality … scifi … I guess … if near modern is included in scifi, then definitely. |
Oberlindes Sol LIC | 23 Sep 2017 7:19 p.m. PST |
Not chiefly. It may be 30 years since I played an ancients game. I'm usually playing science fiction, contemporary, or maybe WW2-era games. |
ZULUPAUL | 23 Sep 2017 8:10 p.m. PST |
Not now, still have my DBA armies (version 2.2) but haven't gamed with them in a while. |
peterx | 23 Sep 2017 8:21 p.m. PST |
Nope. I am very interested in ancient history though. |
myxemail | 23 Sep 2017 8:45 p.m. PST |
Not at all. I have tried many sets of rules over the last 30+ years, and I cannot build much enthusiasm for the period. I am sure I will continue trying anyways, as a lot of my friends are playing ancients/dark ages/ medieval on occasion Mike |
Cyrus the Great | 23 Sep 2017 9:24 p.m. PST |
I was in my younger days and I'd like to be again, but there is little interest among the gamers I currently game with. |

I do game Ancients using To the Strongest, but definitely not a regular ancients gamer. We play a lot of variety locally. |
Forager | 23 Sep 2017 10:14 p.m. PST |
Drop the s from Ancients in the title and you'd be pretty close! |
John Armatys | 24 Sep 2017 2:29 a.m. PST |
No, but I occasionally indulge. |
goragrad | 24 Sep 2017 2:32 a.m. PST |
I am currently primarily gaming DBA 3.0. And at this time most of my armies are from the Ancients period. I do have figures for the Medieval era, but haven't gotten them on the table yet. I also have an extensive collection of microarmor and 1/2400 naval miniatures that get an occasional run. I also have a significant number of Renaissance figures and FOGR looks to be interesting. |
BigRedBat | 24 Sep 2017 3:25 a.m. PST |
My main driver is ancients but I am easily distracted! This winter I shall mostly be painting ECW. |
steamingdave47 | 24 Sep 2017 4:04 a.m. PST |
No. Got a Roman EIR and a Sassanid army, but it's two years since they came out if their storage trays. Prefer games in the 1640 to 1870 period. |

Becoming that way as Saga and Hail Caesar have been very popular down the club. I expect it to me my main period (early Dark Gaes mostly) for another year or so. Still love horse and musket but except for ECW taking a bit of a break |

What's the point of this question ? If it's a poll suggestion, why post it as a topic now and not just run it as a poll ? But even if it was a poll, what's the point ? Some people will say yes, some will say no. It's not going to impart any useful information to anyone. |
Sudwind | 24 Sep 2017 8:59 a.m. PST |
I see value in this poll/post. It isn't scientific, but responses show soft support for ancients gaming. The root causes of this malaise are varied though. Perhaps there is an opening here for a new game system? Or perhaps, there is just not enough interest in the period anymore? If you post something like this for WW2 gaming, I suspect the answers would be overwhelmingly in the positive. |
Dschebe | 24 Sep 2017 9:24 a.m. PST |
Mostly; but no exclusivelly. |
KSmyth | 24 Sep 2017 9:59 a.m. PST |
I used to play tons of ancients. WRG 6th and 7th, a little DBM, tried Fields of Glory, and Hail Caesar. lots of DBA. I finally gave it up. Everything was tournament based and simply didn't seem to simulate warfare in the ancient world. I still play the Hundred Years War with Lion Rampant, but never just count up points, line 'em up and have at it. |
The Last Conformist | 24 Sep 2017 10:20 a.m. PST |
I mostly play medievals, but ancients is the runner up. This is at least partly because rulessets tend to cover both, but not the early modern period. If the rules I used happened to cover 500-1800, say, I imagine I'd play less ancients and more pike-and-musket. |

About 50% of my gaming is DBA -- ancient and medieval. 20% interwar skirmish, mostly VBCW, and the rest assorted fantasy -- mostly HOTT and Ganesha games. |
Diocletian284 | 24 Sep 2017 5:18 p.m. PST |
Yes. 100% my gaming in ancients. 28mm. Playing mostly ADLG due to its great popularity in my area. Hail Caesar my favorite rules. |
jefritrout | 24 Sep 2017 6:08 p.m. PST |
Still my first love, but play lots of different things. If I were to rate… 1 Renaissance 2 Ancients 3 Horse and Musket |

Yes. Ancients has been my primary hobby for over 40 years now. Started with WRG 5th Edition and now playing Art de la Guerre primarily with some DBA 3.0, Also a passionate Warhammer 40K player and starting 28mm WWII using Bolt Action. |
Elenderil | 25 Sep 2017 5:08 a.m. PST |
I have two main areas of interest Ancients and 17th Century European mainly ECW. I started with Featherstone rules took a detour into WW2 using Grants Battle rules then along came WRG Ancients while I was at University. Played WRG 3rd through to 6th or 7th edition. Some DBA and DBM and I'm going to give ADLG a try. I have mainly 6mm armies now. Plus my old 70's 25mm Late Imperials and Sassanids. |
Nikator | 25 Sep 2017 10:26 a.m. PST |
I play several periods, but Ancients are my first love and mostly what I play. |
EvilBen | 25 Sep 2017 10:41 a.m. PST |
Yep. Some moderns, scifi and fantasy but Ancients are still my main focus. |
Blackhorse MP | 25 Sep 2017 12:28 p.m. PST |
About equal parts Ancients, WW2 and ACW. |
