One of CC's threads had me thinking of some of the funny or innovative ones I remembered.

This one always stuck with me,though it may have lost some of its shock value,in the days of Geico and Progressive. Back in 1978,we were still pretty much in the era of earnestness. Someone noticed,anyway--it won a Cleo:

youtu.be/vJCjSslQhco

Around the same time, the Shasta soda company did a series of offbeat commercials. What did they have to lose? Here's one:

youtu.be/SSNNXUa3eoE

And,from much later,a favorite Little Caesars ad (lots of little details fly by almost too fast to notice--like the sign on the door being replaced by "PIZZAS",right at the beginning):

Have a favorite you want to share?

And yes, this fits in the "silly polls" category. I regret nothing!

There are a whole host of Irn Bru adverts which are almost every Scotsmans favourites.

One of them is here:

I wouldn't have recognized her. I suppose it says something bad about me that I always misread her name as "Sophia Viagra ".

Anyway, here's a famous one from way back in 1970:

Oh yeah,me too. There was a parody cartoon (in "Mad"? National Lampoon?)--"You ate it, Ralph."

This one of theirs became a meme, before there were memes. I got tired of hearing it. People even forgot where it came from:

"It's Root Beer Mr Shane" has already been mentioned.

Hey. All of the above. Would it kill you to MENTION what your YouTube link was about? I'm not clicking on all of them. Luckily it was 2 or 3.

My own favorite is Mean Joe Greene.

YouTube link

And maybe it's been mentioned already but I'm not clicking on those anonymous links.

Hafen von Schlockenberg23 Sep 2017 10:09 p.m. PST

Hey, I did at least say Shasta.

But yeah, guess I should have requested some sort of title. Otherwise, we'll just end up with nothing but links. And some will inevitably be repeats,as not everyone will bother clicking, before posting theirs.

Dang, I meant to say Great American Soup.

Oh, I should have also specified acttual, real commercials, not fakes or parodies. So, no Colon Blow. We can do another poll on those,if there's enough interest.

Jeez. Go away for a couple of months, and you forget what a herd of cats this place is.

Cerdic24 Sep 2017 1:09 a.m. PST

Mine was Honda. But it's not like any other car ad, ever…..

Ooh Rah24 Sep 2017 7:51 a.m. PST

Would it kill you to MENTION what your YouTube link was about?

Good point. Mine was the EDS commercial about herding cats. It aired at the 2000 Super Bowl.

My other favorite commercial never actually aired, but was leaked to the Internet. It's a Ford ad that features a pigeon in a starring role.

I'm having a hard time finding a clip for mine, but in the commercial a little girl finds a mountain of toys by the Christmas tree and is told "those must have been some cookies you left Santa", to which she replies "i didn't leave him cookies, i left him cheese!". I absolutely love how she delivers that line, and the look in her face. Priceless.

It was one of those "behold the power of cheese" commercials.

PS. Winston: "Hey. All of the above. Would it kill you to MENTION what your YouTube link was about? I'm not clicking on all of them. Luckily it was 2 or 3."
Whoa, Dude, there way nicer ways of asking for that! If what you are asking for is courtesy, then please do so with some. Lol.

That's perfect! Thanks so much. Don't you just love her expression as she says her last line?

Priceless.

Dan

Hafen von Schlockenberg25 Sep 2017 10:11 a.m. PST

Yeah, I liked that one too.

Too late to edit in,and OT,too boot, but those CBS ads (there were more) were reminiscent of the artwork Stan Hoffman did during the same period, for the LP sleeves on the Columbia Records Crossroads label:

picture

And,of course, Columbia later became CBS Records. Coincidence?

PS: Stepman3--You're just tweaking Winston now, aren't you? He has a point, though.

The commercial that most puzzled me was for Cheer laundry detergent. A young man is at the laundromat and obviously confused about what to do with the pile of dirty clothes in front of him. A woman offers to help him sort and to select different temperatures for different things.

"Oh no," the man says, "three different temperatures? Three different detergents?" She reassures him that "all tempaCheer" will work for all settings.

What always puzzled me was
(1) why would anyone, other than maybe a chemist, think that different temperatures needed different detergents?
and
(2) why would that guy, who is obviously clueless about washing clothes, even have the thought that different temperatures might require different detergents?

Ottoathome28 Sep 2017 2:43 p.m. PST

My favorite commercial today is the Allstate commercial where the black guy is driving his family somewhere and they are all ignoring him and listing to their iphones and pads and devices, and he goes through how he got a rebate and he spent the huge amount of money on a new putter "and mom doesn't know a thing about it." She briefly looks up but then goes back to here phone. He then says "Uh-huh! and sometimes I don't put the seat down on purpose."

Ottoathome28 Sep 2017 2:47 p.m. PST

My favorite commercial of all time is a polaroid commercial. There's a dog looking up at his mistress who is berating him for a smashed bowl or something, and she's wagging her finger going "BAD DOG, BAD DOG! VERY BAD DOG!!! "the dog has the most hang-dog of hang dog looks on his face. The camera pans to the cat who is sitting there smugly.

She leaves and the cat goes over to the pitcher of milk on the counter, various other things that could be broken, burned or eaten. The dog looks toward a knive, a cleaver, various other things, then looks at the polaroid.

The mistress comes back and sees the dog standing there with three pictures of the cat smashing the crockery. The woman goes

OOoooh!!!

I'm bumping, because I forgot a favorite--the Polaner commercial from the 80's:

youtu.be/hawQ5wobi1Y

My father always roared, because of course the "ill-mannered" character would HAVE to be a southern hick, while my mother pointed out the silliness of having a waiter bring the "jellah" to the oh-so-proper table in the jar, instead of the correct, yes, jelly dish.

Old Wolfman19 Oct 2017 6:53 a.m. PST

Of the more recent ones,Snickers with Willem Dafoe and Martin Scorsese or Danny Trejo and Steve Buscemi(with the Brady Bunch). Earlier ones,so many. But one where an animated "B.C." cast singing "Good King Wenceslas" and joined by Grog who's only words are "munch-munch-munch…."which may have been for Marathon Gas . I also remember an updated version of the "I can't beleive I ate the whole thing "ad ,this one with Doris Roberts and Peter Boyle. And another Alka Seltzer ad with George Raft set in a prison mess hall.

Old Wolfman19 Oct 2017 7:06 a.m. PST

Also the PSAs by Yul Brynner,John Wayne, and such. And the one called "Handcrafted" for Newcastle Brown Ale,using that instrumental from "Dawn Of The Dead"(The Gonk) for the background music.

From a tech dummy,here's what I do:
Open the youtube app (or Google videos)
Type in the subject
When the video comes up,tap or click on the screen
Click on the arrow that appears
Click on the "copy link" icon
Go to the page (this one) you want to copy to
Click or tap till "paste" appears, and click that.

I couldn't find it either, but I did find this Shindig clip featuring Dr. Goldfoot (Vincent Price) and a Stridex ad:

Lord BuettTocks25 Oct 2017 5:13 p.m. PST

I remember some really dark commercials from the mid 90's. It was for an insurance company… I think.
The first one was about the company trying to prove how effective they were. To prove their point they will fire a gerbil from a cannon through an "O" or "A" in their company name. The gerbil missile kept missing. The last few seconds of the commercial were further attempts and a gerbil smacking into a wall and flopping on the ground.

The next one involved the same company. They released a pack of rabid wolves on a marching band while they were performing.
The commercial actually showed the dogs attacking the High school kids.

They were hysterical. They also went off the air really quick. Thank yoh FcC.
