Can the wise men of TMP recommend affordable books that cover Hannibal's campaign in Italy, or of his military career in general? I would, if possible, prefer these to be more in the academic realm of writing, but sometimes journalists do indeed write a good work of history.

Anything by Dexter Hoyos, perhaps starting with his brief biography Hannibal – link – or the longer Hannibal's Dynasty – link

John Lazenby's Hannibal's War and Adrian Goldsworthy's The Fall of Carthage: The Punic Wars 265-146BC are both still good.

Patrick Hunt's Hannibal bio is not bad. A bit swallow in my opinion, but short and readeable.

The Fall of Carthage, Adrian Goldsworthy

The Punic Wars, Brian Caven

Titus Livy's Ab Urbe Condita, books 21-30. The author sometimes displays a degree of bias, and some have questioned the reality of certain events, but you can't study Hannibal without it.

My book list is this

Not massively extensive, but it has served me well enough for the Punic Wars.

I second 'Hannibals War' by Lazenby, an excellent read, Goldsworthy too.

Are you in the UK ? I have "The Punic Wars" by Brian Caven and "Hannibal's Dynasty" by Dexter Hoyos that I would be willing to part with for a reasonable price.

I concur about Lazenby's "Hannibal's War". It is an immensely readable and detailed study of the 2nd Punic War. Hannibal's campaigns in Italy, of course, account for much of the content. I like Scullard's "A History of the Roman World: From 753-146 BC" which has large sections on the 2nd Punic War including the Italian campaign.

Thanks all! I am in the USA working on my graduate studies. My professor of Ancient Warfare has picked some fantastic books for the class, but for my term paper I am exploring Hannibal and his Italian campaign in particular.

I really appreciate all of the comments. I will be looking into these books an and probably start with some Amazon purchases!
