For those of you who buy digital copies of rules, how many of you will print a hard copy of those rules? When companies sell digital rules, do they expect that customers might also print those rules for their own use? Is that allowed/intended? If so, is there a good solution for getting a company to print a single copy for you? My guess would be that comb-binding is probably the cheapest solution.

When I want a hard copy I go to FedEx/Kinkos and have it coil bound. I print the rules on my own inkjet printer.

Most companies know that digital rules will be printed out. I ask before buying when dealing with a new company.

I will always print a set that I'm actually using. If I got it out of curiosity then maybe not.

Just as 21eRegt does I will print out a set if I'm going to play them. I go to staples and have them printed in B&W then bound. If a friend has a set I may just print the QRS or other game aid.

As Fusilier, I print them.

Actually, I kill the eye candy, foot notes, sidebars and play examples, reformat the text and then print.

Save a lot of paper and makes things a wee bit easier to follow.

As a seller of pdf versions I think I expect players to print them out. I would also expect them to print multiple copies of the play sheet so that they can go to club and play with others.
As for binding like the coil type binders so that you can lay the rules flat.
Personally I like to have a set of rules in hard form so that i can slip in odd sheets relevant to the scenario or campaign too.
A hard copy is easier to lend to the opponent to look at with a lower risk of device destruction.

I expect people to print out my rules and include a statement to allow them to do it (next to the copyright). If the rules become popular enough, I offer a hard copy option.

I sell digital copies of my rules through DriveThru. I expect people will print a copy at some point and hope they won't print 12 copies to give to their buddies. 😀

As a matter of interest. To those that print a set, how much does it cost (say 30 or so pages).

I always print them out and save the file for reprinting later.

Usually, I print out two copies. The first gets put in document protectors and then put into binder in the game room (for use during play). The second copy can go with me for reference (on vacation, to work, on the night stand). If the second copy wears out, I just print another.

I have never printed out a copy that I would release from my possession.

I do the same as VCarter. One complete color printout usually comb bound (depending on the size) for enjoying and another that has been trimmed of the fat per se for actual learning and playing on the tabletop.

I use my laser printer and comb binding. Printing off one copy at home pretty much pays for my laser refill over Kinkos. I print off the Qrs and laminate it.

I own loads of pdf rules! Almost all printed off.

Thanks,

John

I print them if they're going to get played, using the local Fedex/Kinkos. I printed out Naval Thunder rules for pre-ww2 and had to fill out the copyright form. Maybe it was a formality but because it had "copyright" on the front cover they wanted the form as well.

Saved 100 pages of Frostgrave that way!

You can find online pages that will strip images from a PDF to a Word document. You can then reformat the Word document to break up the pages better, as well as insert any errata and rules changes. After printing, you can take notes on the printout, add on sticky notes to bookmark important pages. If there's a table in the original PDF that's better than the stripped version, just print it and stick it in the binder at the right page. And, of course, while you're doing this, print out any forms, reference sheets, etc. Likewise, if you have any supplements, you can copy and paste the new stuff into your binder! Better than trying to track down information among several different books.

I actually find out that I *read* the darn rules only if I do this… :D

VVV reply I don't remember the actual cost but it was in the $25.00 USD range .07 per page and a dollar or so for binding. I've done CoC and Koning Krieg that way.

I send the PDF to Lulu and have it printed as a private project.

VVV reply21 Sep 2017 10:57 a.m. PST

Thank tou for that so about 3 dollars for printing and binding a copy.

I print a paper copy. There are some places in the house where it is difficult to read a digital copy.

gisbygeo22 Sep 2017 9:46 a.m. PST

If I intend to USE them, I print them out. Sometimes Staples gives me grief, as I am not the copyright holder, and most PDFs seem to not give permission to print in their copyright. Please include this, RPGNow…
