Family on the island (Puerto Rico) is bracing for their second hurricane strike: link I feel really bad for the smaller flatter islands though. If the tide is high when the storm surge hits, that's like a worst case scenario for those low lying islands. Dan PS. At least the rest of the family (in Florida, TX and elsewhere) have been ok. |

The track that I saw had it turning North and missing Florida. Only outer bands raining on it. |

You're right about Florida. It might be spared: link Let's see what happens after it hits PR. Dan |

According to our local broadcast weatherman (who has an impressive track record as a forecaster), Maria MAY miss the US entirely if Jose can hold on for a few more days. His idea, with which the European forecasters agree, is that the steering currents which would push Maria WNW and into the US SE will be ruptured by Jose (if Jose sticks around) and hence allow Maria to proceed N rather than WNW or NW. But PR will be struck, along with some of the other islands. |

We're praying for Puerto Rico. This is horrible for the folks there and for those of us here who have friends & family there. It's agonizing to not hear from them! |

During Irma calls to and from the island were impossible, but texts made it through. Also, one of my nephews and his wife couldn't be reached because they didnt, power in the house, didn't have a car charger, and they were cut off by fallen trees on the roads. All 5 nieces and nephews, their spouses and kids, my brother's widow and her elderly Mom. But all were ok. So this time I made sure all their cell phones are fully charged and that they don't waste their charges making repetitive/unnecessary calls. Three of them even bought "power banks" for their phone batteries. One has a Sat phone too. We have a call tree set up with a single POC (point of contact) outside of the area … me. Once again, bathtubs full of water. Lots of extra bottled water, baby formula and non-refrigerated supplies (including MREs). Water collection setups at roof rain gutters for bathing. They all know the drill now. If power goes out, they'll eat everything in the fridge first, then the freezer, then canned/dry goods. All have gas ranges so no problem cooking. With 175 mph winds they know not to leave their homes. As for my aunts and uncles, my cousins are making similar plans with them. So let's see how it goes this time. Dan |

According to a meteorologist in PR a few minutes ago: "Maria's core about to arrive with 160 mph wind. Gusts as high as 215!" Landfall taking place right now in Humacao (SE coast of PR). Dan |

I just saw the news and it's heartbreaking! Going to donate to the local charities for them, they need everything! |

I've been up all night. Everyone is accounted for except my niece and her two kids. They live in Dorado, on the north coast of PR. Phone lines are down. No ATT cell service either. The last text I got from her said was right as the eye was making landfall. All she said was "It's getting ugly". Dan |

Good news. All now safe and accounted for. My niece and her two kids were in the American Red Cross database and I was contacted and told they were fine. Whew! Now I can relax a little and just deal with the simple material losses we've had these last few weeks, both ours and theirs. In the end, that's just small stuff. Thanks guys for all your prayers and good thoughts. Dan |
