Hi everybody, I will stay a week in New York, and I would like some advises on wargames shops, mainly where I can buy some plastic figures (american brands, more difficult to get here in Spain, like Imex, Accurate, AIP, Pegasus etc..) . I read in a former post about the Red Caboose shop, is there more ? Many thanks in advance for your hints !! |

Besides one hobby shop (here in Austin, Texas), our local Hobby Lobby store sells a limited amount of 1/72 Imex figures. So it is possible that Hobby Lobby stores in NYC sell some too. |

If you're after 1/72nd plastic try then, as you suggest, The Red Caboose at 23 W 45th St Bsmt B, New York, NY 10036 (between 5th and 6th) is the best bet. It's a little hard to find as there is only a doorway at street level on the north side of the street next to the Cock & Bull. They have an extensive model railway collection but do carry military kits and figures almost exclusively in 1/72nd. |

Thanks to both, for your suggestions !! |

Both shops are worth a visit -- they're old school hobby stores. The Red Caboose is particularly atmospheric: it's in a basement and there's a lot of inventory. If the same guy is running it, he can be a little brusque, but that just adds to the charm, to my mind. The last time I was there I asked if they had the fine-grained white Milliput. He managed to make me feel as if I were slightly effete for not making do with the gray! |

The Red Caboose guy is an interesting character. Prices may vary based on what he thinks you will pay after eying you up… |

There are no Hobby Lobby in NYC that I know of. There are some in New Jersey, but this is not usually a worthwhile trip unless you are already staying on that side of the river. |

I will second what Jeff and James said about the Red Caboose and its owner. There used be a second chap but I haven't seen him in my last few, admittedly infrequent, visits who always stomped about the place in flying boots, a grey coat and the Blue Max on a ribbon round his neck. If nothing else, you can chalk it up as a "real New York experience." |

Salutations, gentlefolk, Closest Hobby Lobby I know of is on US 1 in Metuchen (?) by Menlo Park Mall. Passed it on way to NJCon in June, but never been inside. Maplewood Hobby – maplewoodhobby.com – has reasonable selection of 1/72 plastic figures, and is fairly easy to get to – PATH to Newark, route 25 or 70 to Broadview and Springfield Aves, $2.55 USD bus fare, lets you off half-a-block away. Also gets you chance to eat at Park Wood Diner, other end of block, one of New Jersey's best. |

Thanks to all for your tips !! I agree,Hobby Lobby is quite far from Brooklyn . I will stick to the Complete Strategist and Red Caboose, hoping that the owner will not misjudge my economical capacities. Whatever,by looking the pictures, it's true that the venue is well worth a visit. There's others interesting adresses for a wargamer? Other than shops? Historical sites, museums etc… Once again cheers for helping me in my first visit across the Pond. New York City, here I come !!! |

When are you coming over? |

Since you're going to be there a week…. I've been to the Maplewood hobby shop a few times and would suggest you not rule it out. Every time I was there, I ended up finding something to buy. I've also been to The Compleat Strategist and it's not what it once was (in the 80's). Last time I seemed more of a board game shop to me. |

Alberto, Depending on how soon you will be here, you may want to make a list of what you are looking for and see the any of the shops linked about would be willing to order it for your pickup. |

Certainly go to the Metropolitan museum of Art to see their medieval weapons and armor collection. |

Hi, I realize that I totally forgot to thank you all for yours tips and advices!! Our trip to N.Y city was fantastic. I really enjoyed our walks and strolls, notably the museums , such treasures !! The Met's armor collection was really great just to mention one. the Red Caboose shop, what a peculiar place !! I couldn't resist and left the venue with a box of Imex friendly indians and left behind some AIP for another occasion. I raided the Strand book shop and went back with two Don Troiani beautiful books, Kerr's Vietnam Dispatches and Moyahan's Leningrad Siege& Symphony. Overall I will definitively come back . |
