Hi, I'm looking to develop a Japanese force for early war Chinese theatre. Can anyone recommend manufacturers of 20mm Japanese figures which don't look Pacific-y?

it's for Khalkin Gol, actually.

It used to be that Airfix were the only plastic 1/72nd scale WWII era Japanese figures. Now there are lots of them including paratroopers, Kamikaze, bicycle troops, and heavy weapons. All are very nice.

Thanks for that – does anyone know of any metal figure manufacturers?

Most of these can be used at Khalkin Gol/Nomonhan. Strelets are also working on Japanese troops in Winter clothing..

Just curious, where IJA vehicles in China and Mongolia camouflaged or a solid coat?

I have built a force of IJA using the Eureka 20mm figures and was very happy with them. They offer three choices for headgear. You can see some of them here Eureka 20mm Japanese

Sadly no one does proper early war Japanese for the period between Shanghai and Nomonhan.

Stonewall does do winter troops in greatcoats though.
