Was looking at TAG's lovely Aztec and Tlaxacalan ranges and wondering what would be a good rules set for pre-European battles? |

I am currently leaning towards TSATF rules, but look forward to hear others opinions. |

The army lists will vary based on the rules. A big difference between skirmish and unit games. For example, one system has the large formations on community n warriors being lead by either a Jaguar or an Eagle knight instead of the knights fighting as separate units. The same goes for the talaxicans who had units of bow or spear lead by individual Swan knights. Really depends on what level you want to play. |

Isn't there a TSATF variant called "The Cross and the Gold" or something similar ? |

I'm holding my breath waiting for Pendraken to release their Mexican range. |

Pikeman's Lament has it covered via there Exotic Army Lists, although these are not part of the rule book and need to be downloaded. Don't need many figures to get started gaming. |

Also, En Garde has rules for them… |

I've just found this EXCELLENT article on the I Live with Cats blog creating a list and rules for Lion Rampant: link |

MAybe Hordes of the Things? |
The Beast Rampant | 18 Sep 2017 8:49 a.m. PST |
I second Quetzalcoatl Rampant. There is also "War in Eldorado", a "By the Sword" supplement by Chris Peers. I believe it's based off the rules earlier printed in WI, similar to his "In the Heart of Africa". |

…and a 3rd vote for Quetzalcoatl Rampant. I posted about them on my blog here… link |

The Lament/Rampant series for smaller battles, say up to 100 per side, and then Irregular Wars as Pondoo mentions for the next size up to maybe a couple thousand per side. |

I know the question is about rules. My post is about miniatures. I really like Outpost Wargame Services Aztecs. link |

There are three solid ranges of figures for the period in 28mm. My favorite are the Aztecs and Spanish by Eureka Miniatures. They are bit larger than Outpost, and quite a bit bigger than TAG. They are available from Eureka Miniatures USA that provides the best customer service on the planet. Most of my Tlaxcalan figures are from Outpost. I love 'em. The figures are nice and not particularly expensive. The different banners for the noble orders are really a nice add, but they do unbalance the figs a bit. Good customer service, easy to deal with, but there is shipping from the U.K.--but not a bar to buying from them. The Aztecs and Tlaxcalan range from The Assault Group are good, but more slightly built than Outpost and noticeably so compared with Eureka. No mixing there. But there are not enough printable words to describe their terrible service to the U.S. If you are in the U.K., life is good, if you are over here, thanks but no. Thanks for the nice words about Quetzacoatl Rampant. I am David's partner in that project and we did lots of playtesting before hosting a couple of big games at Enfilade in May. My Aztecs have been resting ever since. |
