My wife is flying to the Marshal Islands next year with her mother for Girl Scout outreach. So that leaves me two weeks to myself. So I am thinking of taking some money from savings and going on my own solo-vacation, so to speak.

My first thoughts are to drive down to New Orleans to visit the National World War II Museum. Then over to Houston to see the USS Texas. Then up to Waco for the Texas Rangers Museum, then Fort Hood for the Army museums there. Then on to DFW for a night before heading home. Of course all this travel will include stops at wargame and toy soldier shops.

That is Plan A.

Here is Plan B.

Rent a weekend stay in the USS Batfish. Bring naval wargaming gear and laptop. Set up in the captain's quarters, if possible. Buy one of the Silent Hunter sub sims. Turn down to real time and patrol the Pacific. Only come out when in harbor (will pause the game for head calls.)

I don't know I might could squeeze both those together since Muskogee would be on the way home from DFW.

Can you really rent the Batfish? That is a close drive for me.

Man, that's a lot of driving. Have you mapped out the miles?

Holy submergences! I didn't know that Wayne Industries was renting out the Batfish! Good to diversify, I guess.

I enjoyed the Texas. It is more or less across the street from the San Jacinto Battlefield, so you might want to include that. Less impressive than a battleship, there is (or perhaps was) a destroyer escort on display in Galveston. There is also a destroyer on display at Baton Rouge

Grelber is right, if you are there check out the San jacinto battlefield. Maybe it will be dried out by then.

From New Orleans, If you go east to Mobile, then you can check out the USS Alabama, Uss Drum submarine, and the ACW Fort Morgan.

The WWII museum in New Orleans is very good. However, MISS the really cheezy submarine 'experience' for which they charge a large extra fee. You would be ALMOST as disappointed as I was.
