Inspired by some of the nominations in the Favourite Tank poll that are not actually tanks, I thought we could do 'not tanks'.

So, what is your favourite tank-like thing that is not actually a tank?

You can have assault guns, self-propelled guns, APCs, all that kind of stuff. But please, no tanks. You nominate a tank, I will hunt you down and tattoo 'I love Justin Bieber' on your forehead while you sleep…

What is you're definition of a tank? For example the 'Churchill AVRE' is thought of as a tank by most but the 'Churchill ARK' isn't and modern vehicles doing either task are not usually thought of as tanks.

Love me that ONTOS…….Great link, thanks VVV reply

"During the Ontos' testing at the Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, all six guns were fired at once and the backblast was so great that it knocked bricks out of nearby buildings and shattered numerous car windows."

Loved that old Renwal plastic Ontos model.

Do they have to be real, or can GI Joe things count too?

I love deep bucket front-end loaders, you know, with the four huge tires and the pivot in the front, and the driver sits inside a "phone booth" perched way on top. You can do major destruction with that bucket, heck, just the tires going over stuff. They are maneuverable and, from the front, well nigh indestructible to small arms fire (unless you get shot at with "cop killer bullets", of course, but all of those have been outlawed *roll eyes*).

A sentimental attraction to the old M-577. I spent some time in one. But the M-36 "Hellcat" TD continues to fascinate.

When. I was in the Army during the Vietnam era, my platoon contained M551 which was a Recon vehicle not a tank. For offensive, it had a 152mm gun that could shot bee hive, HEP or AT misses. It also had a .50 cal, a .30 cal coax, a favorite extra weapon was the old WW2 era carbine which was favored by the crew. We also had six smoke grenade launchers.
When you scraped a building or tree, you could see what it was really made of. Syrofoam covered by a sheet of aluminum.
A note here a a favorite tactic of the loader, driver and TC. They would place amo cans as protection around their hatches.
When the VC/NVA snipers would shoot at the crew, they liked to hit the ammo can and watch the fire works. However these cans were filled with sand, so they acted as a arly warning device. The crew would drop when the ammo cans would go had.

Don't know what they are called, but I like those Marine Hovercraft that carry about a half dozen assault vehicles on them.

14Bore had it right, StuG III

Jagdpanthers are also cool as are those tiny little Hetzers and the Guderian Duck (Jagdpanzer IV)

The Archer is an interesting vehicle – you shoot backwards; I have yet to master using one, which must be possible because they were apparently popular with their crews; anyone have any advice?

Narratio10 Sep 2017 7:51 p.m. PST

Stu III … one of the early models with the short 75mm.

Can we add "tankettes"? If so then I bags the Italian motorized coffin L33 or possibly the British MkIV.

Any of the American halftrack gun motor carriages. 105mm howitzers, 75mm guns, pack howitzers, whatever was handy seemed to work. Just stick on wheels n' tracks and motor it around the battlefield.

Rudy, I was in the 82nd in the 1980s and we still had and loved the M551 Sheridan. It could put a HUGE hole in a building that you wanted to breach. Against tanks not so much but every thing has its downfall.
