Since the maneuver element for all cavalry is the brigade, what is the role of the division commander other than attaching to a unit to convey a bonus during close action or morale checks of whatever kind?
I don't see a reference to them conveying any order activation bonus unless superior division commander.

Administration more than tactical. They get the logistics: supplies, replacement horses, men, etc.
One aspect is too collect and analyze scouting and other unit progress, operational, reports.
For a game design for this system, I do not know.
Sorry I thought this was a serious point of discussion from a research point of view.

Well… Why?
Why so different from infantry ones?
Guys like Lassalle, Fournier Sarlovèze, Pajol, Montbrun etc. Did not get their fame by counting beans.
Coordination?
Leadership?
Coup d'oeil?

Some of those you mention have higher command ratings. While if they are serving as divisional commanders we don't give the initiative bonus for being attached to the ME, if they are at the regimental level we give them the morale/elan bonus if one applies.

This was an Empire rules specific question. I know what their actual role was, but in Empire rules there are rules for maneuver element commanders (divisions for infantry, brigades for cavalry) and corps commanders and up. The cav division commander seems to have been left with little to do as far as the game is concerned; he's not a maneuver element commander and the rules dont indicate that he impacts the subordinate brigades' activation of orders. He can grab a sword and lead them into battle providing a bonus and that seems to be about all he's good for.

tvlamb: We have modified the Empire rule for cavalry division commanders by placing them in the chain of command. The cavalry corps commander receives an order from the army commander, sends his orders to his cavalry division commanders who then sends their orders to their brigades. Of course the cavalry division commanders need to be rated. All normal activation rules apply. Thanks, John Miller

tvlamb: Sorry, it was an Empire specific question, my bad as they say. I can't speak to the authors intention, that's just the way we like to put them into the complete chain of command picture. John Miller
