One 3D Model, Many Bases?

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian wonders why create different 3D models, if you can create one that can be customized?

Spare all the details, but I want to rebase my LotR elves.
They have those stupid "slotta" things (hate 'em).
I want to rebase them into units – instead of single figures. I tried using green stuff to build a base around the slot – but that didn't work (kept tipping over before herdening)
Clipping the slot isn't really an option – leaves too little lead behind to glue to a stand.

Any suggestions?

Clip the tab, drill up into the foot/leg, insert wire, drill base, insert wire into base, superglue.

Simples.

Alternative that might work is to superglue and baking soda (decrease set time) glue the figures to the base and then add greenstuff to improve stability.

Been doing that when repairing figures that have broken off bases (although I also drill and pin depending on the figure and the damage).

Similar to JimDuncanUK…

Clip out the center of the tab, but leave the tab parts under the feet. Drill hole in your base…

Saves you from pinning by using the tab parts under the feet as your "pin"

Strange.

The following worked well for my GW Orc/Goblin army.

I clipped all the tabs and filed the bottom of the feet so the figures could stand upright. Then glued them to triplex bases and textured the base with a white glue/sand mix.

I always cut/bend the slot tab off the figure, file the feet till it stands, then mount it on Cardboard and texture the base, or flock it.

Yes, 'peg' the base tabs. I do it all the time. I haven't used a slotta base (at least, the slot part) in ages.

then mount it on Cardboard

Clip out the center of the tab, but leave the tab parts under the feet.

If the slot is really deep, then trim the tabs a little

I have had success building up the base using grey stuff instead of green stuff. Could also support the figure while the green stuff dries, or use air hardening clay, or quick superglue to base, then build green stuff up around it.

Put a splodge of green stuff on the base, push the tab into the green stuff, pull it straight out and let the green stuff set. Then put super glue into the channel in the green stuff and hold the figure in place whilst the glue takes effect. Then build up around the figures feet with basing material.
Before you start you could trim the edges of the tabs with clippers so they don't stick out to the sides.
