"The U.S. Army announced on Wednesday that it is rapidly procuring more than 1,000 shoulder-fired 84mm recoilless rifles from Saab for deployment as soon as possible.

The weapon is the Carl-Gustaf M4, known as the M3E1 in the United States

Through the use of titanium, the Multi-Role Anti-Armor Anti-Personnel Weapon System, or MAAWS, is more than six pounds lighter than its earlier iteration, 2.5 inches shorter and has an improved carrying handle, extra shoulder padding and an improved sighting system…"

Didn't a 84mm mortar required a 4 man crew in WWII? This thing is sweet! I want one!!!

Its also liable to damage your hearing because of the back pressure, so wear ear defenders. Lots of interesting ammo for it though.

Bummer, the article didn't explain why they are getting them "rapidly" to deploy "as soon as possible". Is there something that urgently needs these to counteract?

Apparently its range that is the issue. The Afghans are out ranging the standard US personal weapons.

And using Javelin is way too expensive and overkill

The Army SOF has been using the Carl Gustav for many years. I know they had planned to add this to the 'conventional force.' Not sure why it's a rapid procurement item?

The USMC has used the SMAW for the same 'niche' for at least 30 years.

ATGMs are very good at range. But rockets and recoilless rifles are better at 'medium ranges' and ammo is much cheaper; which often translates into Soldiers and Marines being better trained on their employment.
