Starting a ACW project and wondered how everyone tackles the Union command stand. Where is the officer where is the drummer and do you have the Stars & stripes and the blue flag? Actually I could use the Reb version as well. Thanks TMPers. |

Well, for my 6mm Union command stands, I used 2 strips of 4 figures per stand. The first rank has the National and Regt flags in the middle flanked by bog standard infantry. As for the drummer and officer figures (which we all get), those go in the spares pile. Drummers, IIRC, were not in the ranks in combat (or were not suppose to be; there may be exceptions to that). And the officer figure gets used elsewhere. That's my method, and I'm sure there are others just as good. Bottomline: pick what looks best to you. |

Depends on what the ranks are doing: Advancing/charging – officer and flags in front Marching – officer and drummer in front Firing – officer in back |

I have four figs per base, so for Union command I have officer/drummer first rank, then both flags second rank For the Rebs I have officer/drummer first rank and then flag(s) (sometimes I use a State flag) second rank – when onl one flag, I use a sergeant figure |

Approach I have taken: click on the close-ups TMP link My officer is on the front rank and drummer on second. I do not understand the drummers are placed on the front when all the organizational diagrams for a battalion has them in the third or behind the third rank of NCOs. So I place in second for 2 rank figure mounting. What flashman 14 makes some sense. Not sure I agree on the marching though. Bullets still are flying in a march to advance. I will have to reconsider my firing guys positions ( in the mins now of mounting)-thanks flashman14. good luck MG |

I generally have an officer, a drummer, and 1 standard bearer. The flag goes in the middle. I am not concerned if I don't have enough drummers to go around; I simply put a soldier there instead. Just do whatever looks right to you. Everyone is going to know that the stand with a flag(s) is the command stand. |

I do mine historically looking. The flags in the front rank and Sgt.s & Corporals behind them. Sometimes and officer peaking in firing his pistol in defense of the colors. Never a drummer/bugler or mounted officers. It was never done that way in real life. Your mileage may vary. |

For my 15/18mm Union I go with Officer and drummer/bugler on the front rank with two flag bearers behind. This is for Brigade F&F |

My ACW forces are based for RFF and F&F; so 3 guys per stand. for command stands, I place 1 officer and 2 standard bearers (one for the regimental flag and 1 for the USA flag); I don't do musicians. This makes it easy for me to organize my troops. each unit / regiment then needs only 1 command stand instead of 2. |
