Howdy,

I've always done small unit WWII actions in 1/72 and would really like to continue to do so. However, it seems that there isn't much of a range for actions in Burma; specifically Commonwealth figures (Gurkha, Chindits, ragged British). Next preference would be 15mm but google foo didn't turn up much on that either. Can someone point me to a good line in either of these two scales. I've got an eye to playing Chain of Command.

Thanks, -Joel T.

You have perfect timing. There are a number of new figures just right for Burma. Indian Infantry and Heavy Weapons, several Japanese kits including heavy weapons, and even Chindits. HaT even makes some ancient elephant kits that will work to provide additional transportation!

Japanese are well represented in 1/72 plastics and there are some lovely figures.

My Strelets Indians will be fighting the Japanese with some added metals for medics, at rifles and 50mm mortars.

Other commonwealth forces will be made up from existing plastics eg the Revell Chindits, once again with some added metals, probably from Grubby or SHQ.

Revell Chindits? Never heard of these.

John Leahy – the Chindits I am referring to is a Revell re-release of the Matchbox set.

I have 20mm Japanese and Australians/British both from Eureka Miniatures. The Australians come in either tin helmet or slouch hat and both sets of figures work well for Burma British with the slouch hats being perfect for Chindits. You can follow my progress and reviews of these figures and other sets suitable for Burma (plus terrain) here:

You could also try Wartime Miniatures who have Aussies in slouch hats which would pass for British too.

Most of the Wartime Miniatures Aussie won't pass for British in Burma, they can't even be used as Aussies in the Pacific. They wear the early war uniform worn in the early stages of he Western Desert campaign and in Greece. They are nice figures, but the inform is wrong for Burma.

I think the Wartime Miniatures Aussies are intended for New Guinea.
I'd go 15mm Peter Pig for 14th Army

Oh, ok. I have some of the Matchbox ones primed and waiting for paint.

Hey, thanks all. Looks like I'll be sourcing from multiple locations.

The Matchbox figures are probably the best in 1:72 to use for 14th Army. Although they're marketed as Anzacs they're all wearing short anklets which were typical for the British. From what I can gather Aussies in the Far East favoured the longer American gaiters. The slouch hats were also universal for Brits in the Burma campaign but for variety you could swap a few for helmets.

Check out Covert Intervention Games… they bought the Force20 range and have OSS Det 101 and Burmese Tribesman with machetes and small arms. Tribesman are even sculpted slightly small and go well with FAA, Matchbox, etc…
