They do have flags and eagles. I used a young guard standard bearer. |

baxterj You may want to re-look at that. The middle and young guard ( fuzilier Grenadiers, voltigiers Grenadiers etc) did not carry an eagle. Any flag they carried was of the fannion type. link Only the Old guard and marines carried a flag with eagle. link h MG |

Without checking back at my references Greg, I do recall now only one eagle for each of the grenadier and chasseur branches. Thanks for the correction 😀 |

Thx chaps, I honestly thought every battalion in the napoleonic period had a regiment and national flag. |

Basically the Old Guard regiments had the flags and eagles. All the Middle Guard and Young Guard regiments were junior formations to Old Guard regiments. So…in essence and explained simply, a Guard formation was a mixture of several regiments with the Old guard representing the senior unit hence why they only had the flags and eagles. Several guard regiments were "specialist" in nature and had no junior formations… OG Marines, Sappers of the Guard for example, or were "family or regional regiments"…. 3rd Dutch Grenadiers, Velites of Turin or Florence. OG Grenadiers – Velite Grenadiers (during their existence) – Fusilier Grenadiers – YG Tirailleurs (Tirailleur Grenadiers) – Flanker Grenadiers OG Chasseurs – Velite Chasseurs (during their existence) – Fusilier Chasseurs – YG Voltiguers (Tirailleur Chasseurs) – Flanker Chasseurs |

Thankyou very much for that informative and interesting reply. My ignorance begs another question now, can a flag not have an eagle at the top and thus can a shaft with an eagle not have a flag attached? |

Keep in mind the Eagle was the treasured and defended icon for the French regiments. The flag was secondary and didn't have the same reference in the common soldiers eyes. Napoleon restricted the eagles disbursement, going to the effort to restrict the eagles to only the 1st battalions. Other regimental battalions had to return in their excess battalion eagles to the "War Dept" after 1808 I think. The flag is attached to the flag pole (stave?) with gilded nails, the stave generally blue in color, for the early and mid imperial years. It was never attached to the eagle. |
