…..and so Operation Ruddy Darter (or "Darter" as its known by all but the brass) begins…..

Centred around Damaris (a fictional town in the greenzone, Helmand Province), an under strength platoon of British Infantry have been deployed to COP Damaris on the Southern edge of town. Damaris town is at a strategically important junction, with a large dry gully that passes East to West through the town that acts as a highway for the Taliban's supplies, and as such is a hotly contested area.

Control of the town has waivered back and forth, one month being controlled by the Taliban, the next the ISAF. The British have been tasked with re-establishing control and cutting off the Taliban supply route.

The rules I'm using are Spectre Operations, for all the combat mechanics and a modified version of Martin England's "Threat generation System" for the Opfor AI. The major modification to this system is that in order for the Opfor to become involved in the game each command phase the Taliban Commander must pass a command test, and if successful one random unit will come onto the board, as outlined in TGS. The second major change I have made is that in order for the ISAF forces to engage with the Taliban they must postively ID them. This is done by means of passing a command check (or of course being fired on). If they dont pass the check, they cant fire, but can check again in the next command phase.

Game 1 – "The Streets have no name" sees Sgt. Ed Norton and Alpha Section make an exploratory circular patrol of the southern edge of the town. They don't know what to expect, so just have some light mortars in support off table.

The table as set up at the start of game 1. South is at the bottom of the photo.

The British start at the Southern edge of the table.

In turn 3, a returning Taliban patrol, consisting of 10 men enter the table from the East.

Cpl Glenn's men leave the compound and are faced with the Taliban to their left who scatter into the corn field.
