I recently reviewed Swimming With WarlordsTMP link – in which he remembers covering the Northern Alliance as they pushed back the Taliban in 2001.

Does anyone game the Northern Alliance?

Any idea what an 'army list' would look like? In 2001, I would imagine they were beginning to get a flood of support from the West – would it be Soviet equipment? Hard to imagine shipping NATO equipment so far.

I worked with (more liaise than work) a unit from the Northern Alliance in early 02. They were entirely equipped with Soviet kit. The only strange thing was hanging behind the commanders chair was a British L42 sniper rifle (the one based on the Lee Enfield but 7.62) We hadn't used them since the late 80s, who knows how it got there, but he did ask me if I could get him ammunition for it.

Thanks for the info!

I've certainly read accounts of early battles (the "cavalry charge-like" ones) where it is at least claimed that that significant portions of troops were equipped with a handful of rounds only, with the troops charging in waves and then firing what they had to cover the next line charging past. All this supported by US air strikes.

Certainly a cool image but I kinda would be surprised if they were truly that low on ammunition…

Hey all,

I was actually just going to post a similar thread. I read somewhere that the Northern Alliance had a greenish camo uniform and mostly Soviet weapons. Does anyone know of a figure line that would work for these guys?

When I get back from London I'll post a few photos of me with the Northern Alliance, I'm sure I've got some with that camouflage pattern on.

Here you go, as promised. Northern Alliance in camouflage, with myself early 02 in Kabul. Pictures are a bit blurred, I can only describe the camouflage pattern as a bit like faded Rhodesian.

Would there be a lot of variation between different factions/warlords in the Northern Alliance?

foxweasel30 Aug 2017 4:22 p.m. PST

I honestly don't know, but I doubt it. The Northern Alliance was restricted to a small area of the country in 01, their logistics must have been fairly limited.

Foxweasel, this is Morris M from C Flt 34. I only recognise " RF " on the flanks. Small world.

Very small world , what are you up to now?

Nice one foxweasel.
Did you get him the ammo?

foxweasel02 Sep 2017 2:14 p.m. PST

No, I wasn't going to encourage the lunatic!😁 This was in the pre Herrick days when we still had to account for every round and I wasn't going to sit de-linking 4bit for him.

I still work for the Crown up near Liverpool way, just wear a different colour uniform now.
I remember getting a button on hood for my smock which both the hood and smock had button holes instead of buttons and a pair of proboots that the sole crumbled off.

I'm still in, just part time now though, left regulars 2 years ago. Still do a lot of work with 34, still a few of the old crowd about.
