I think it is from US military parlance rather than that of the UK. It would be more common for US players to use it. British players might give a "battle report". I expect that just like "billion" the US majority will win out. |

We use After Action Reports as well now Martin. |

Well, I'm asking from Canada and I've never heard of AAR. But I've never been in the military. :) |

Actually, it is after action review. The formal practice as we do it today began in the US in the late 1970's or early 1980's. the idea is for all participants to discuss what went well and where things can be improved -- without censorship -- to facilitate improvement. There is no 'right' to never be offended during an AAR as there seems to be in other fora. |

It's actually both, a report after an action or contact and a review where various representatives from the unit will discuss the action. But I'm speaking from the British forces side, I had always assumed it was NATO standard, maybe not. |

We use in the Australian Police too. Action Plan, followed by the After Action Report. |

Strangely enough, the acronym had a use in business, sort of like what I surmise the Australian Police used it as. When we had failures in a process, an analysis was performed and a corrective 'Action Plan' was developed. After implementation, the altered process was tracked for a period of time and if the desired result had been gained, an 'After Action Review' was held to help improve the improvement process. Someone up the management chain noted the similarity to the military's AAR, so the term was changed to 'Post Action Review'. |

Very useful, including pirates. Though, I think the preferred spelling is 'Arrh!' Doug |
