Can anyone point me to where I can find a MERDC camouflage layout for an M2/3 Bradley? I know they were in Germany in this colour scheme in the early 80s, but my googlefu has totally failed me on this, and l want to field a Bradley scout troop. |

I think you might be better off doing either straight OD green or NATO 3 color. See this link for a picture from REFORGER '85: link Not sure if there were any Bradley's in MERDC, but I may be wrong. |

And before I can hit submit, the depths of my ignorance is exposed! Anyone know how many and what units received MERDC? I assume POMCUS stocks would be in OD Green while units stationed in Germany would have MERDC? |

As I remember, we had only Forest Green or 3-color NATO on our M-2/3s in Europe. I seem to recall some CONUS based units (but not many) painted up their Bradley's in MERDC, but it was unofficial. Mark |

Yes, I remember rarely if ever seeing any MERDC, but mostly the Standard 3 color NATO. On all of our vehicles. Whether CONUS, Panama, Europe or the ROK. During the '79-'90 time frame. |

The only place I ever saw Bradleys in MERDC was at Ft Irwin in the stocks the rotational units drew from. In all of the operational Cav units I was in, the Bradleys, and Abrams for that matter, were forest green up until GW1 and sand thereafter. |

When I was at the NTC twice in the late '80s. IIRC … Everything was painted from the rotational stocks, were in a 3 color desert camo. IIRC, brown, tan and small black "squiggles". |

Thanks for the info guys. I must admit I do fancy doing them in MERDC, although from what you have said and from rereading my old books it does appear the only vehicles in that scheme were at training centres in the US. If the balloon had gone up, and the Soviets come boiling over the IGB would the vehicles from the US have been deployed to Europe? |

Yes, most US units in CONUS were slated to deploy to the ETO if the USSR & WP crossed the IGB … Most vehicles in the US were not in training units. Most were in combat units training to go to war, like 90%+ or more IIRC. I'd imagine the training units' vehicles may have been used for replacements if need be. And remember it takes a few weeks to get to Europe from the US by cargo ship. Plus there were pre-deployed vehicles in Europe in POMCUS stocks. Those would be painted generally in the current camo scheme used at any particular time frame, AFAIK … And in some cases combat units were tasked to work with training units for exercises, etc. E.g. at Ft Benning, GA. The US ARMY's INFANTRY Training Ctr. And those combat units were painted in standard 3 color camo. As mentioned, at that time frame. As an M113 Mech Co Cdr with a separate Mech Bde at Benning '87-'89. That Bde was part of the 18th ABN Corps/RDF with the 101 and 82d. Many times my Mech Platoons were tasked to assist in training the various classes and schools going on at Benning. Sometimes as Light Infantry without tracks. I'm sure it was pretty much the same at Ft. Knox, KY, the US ARMY's Armor Training Center, etc., etc. Combat units would be in some cases "training aids", OPFOR, etc. So again the vast majority of units were Combat units, many deployable to the ETO. While some units on the West Coast were slated for the PTO, primarily the ROK. IIRC, about/at least 2 Divisions from CONUS. I.e. the 7ID and 9ID. The 25ID was in HI, so they were in theater already. Currently many things have changed since then, with unit deactivations, reflagging, etc. But that is an entire other topic. |
