I am not a fan of this publication but this review does a much better job of expressing my disappointment in the film. link |

I agree. After reading some of the reviews by fellow members here, I was prepared for a new addition to my own top 10 War films. Sadly, it was hard pressed to make the top 100. As I said elsewhere the new Dunkirk movie, like the new "War of the Worlds" movie, only made me want to see the original. |

Before you see the 'old' War of the Worlds movie try reading the original book by HG Wells. It's a cracking read. |

I am not a fan of this publication but this review does a much better job of expressing my disappointment in the film. Why did you feel the need to preface your comment with the disclaimer "I'm not a fan of this publication?" Just curious. |
Col Durnford | 17 Aug 2017 2:57 p.m. PST |
Jim, I fully agree. Actually, I even liked Jeff Wayne's version better that Tom Cruse's. |

I couldn't care less what anyone's opinion of this film is. I'm going to make up my own mind once I've seen it. |

If you're looking for a great "war" movie, then perhaps it's best you pass by "Dunkirk." If you're looking for an exciting tale of heroism, self-sacrifice, human failings, and the triumph of man's spirit in near-hopeless adversity, go see "Dunkirk." |

I liked the Dunkirk movie. |

I enjoyed it, but it was like cinematic cotton candy. Pretty, briefly tasty, but utterly forgettable. I won't watch it on cable again like I might The Thin Red Line, or Battle of the Bulge, or The Longest Day. |
Col Durnford | 17 Aug 2017 4:24 p.m. PST |
I do not regret seeing it, just it did not live up to my expectations based on what I read. As they said in another movie "it's the best bad plan we have". in this case it's the best WWII movie of this summer. |

I've seen it, and I thought dBerczerk's assessment was reasonable. I won't be painting castings to the soundtrack, or even raising a 1940 British army. But I'm glad I saw it. |

I really enjoyed the Dunkirk film. Just shows how subjective the topic is. |

+1 for really enjoyed the film. In fact it encouraged me to pick up a couple of books on the subject of the start of the war through to Dunkirk which I am really enjoying. The only thing I didn't like was the burning of the Spitfire at the end … just because the way the front of the plane looked it was clear there was no engine behind the propeller (no I'm not suggesting they should have burned a real one :-). … oh and they were using the wrong colour sand (j/k). |

A reasonable review. I enjoyed the film and did not mind that it concentrated just on the beeches rather than expand to the earlier battles, it is called Dunkirk, not The Fall of France after all. I just felt that it could have been much better using a more conventional narrative structure than the one used, and a little more CGI would have been useful to boost the numbers of troops and ships. That said I would still recommend that people see it and make up their own minds. |

I saw a description of the film as being like a dream or a collective memory of what happened, and I think that's a good description. It has a dream-like quality. It's not trying to be a historical documentary, any more than 'Guernica' is an accurate depiction of combat in the Spanish Civil War. |

I thought the movie was quite brilliant and achieved what it set out to do. It should not be criticised for not setting out to do what others like wargamers want! a number of people who saw it but are not wargamers have been asking me a lot of questions about it because they are now interested. And my son who has zero interest in wargaming came to see it and afterwards was found studying maps to understand what happened! The best or-worst- criticism I saw was that the ME109 nose cones were yellow and this was wrong because this didn't happen until July 1940!!!!Really! |

The excellent UK drama 'Piece of cake' is available on Youtube. Well worth a watch. Tells the story of a hurricane squadron in the early war years |

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, it did not disappoint for me. |

A slightly older buddy of mine had an interesting spin on it: It's a western. Only instead of indians attacking the wagon train of settlers you have the Nazis attacking the escaping British troops, with the small boats playing the role of the cavalry. It should not be criticised for not setting out to do what others like wargamers want! Yes it should, and this isn't unique to historians. Most movie critiques are not based on how well the directors carried out their vision. The critiques are based on how good the directors' vision was. And I agree that 'Piece of Cake" is definitely worth viewing. |
Vigilant | 18 Aug 2017 8:56 a.m. PST |
Piece of Cake was pretty good for its time, though the book is far superior in my view. There was also a sequel to the book which took the squadron to the Western Desert which was good, though not as good as the 1st book. Going back to the "BF 109" in Dunkirk, I may be mistaken but I think that it is a recently restored one that appeared in the Battle of Britain movie back in the 60s. |
IronDuke596 | 18 Aug 2017 9:17 a.m. PST |
Not a typical war film. It had the good the bad and the ugly sequenced into Crescendo building and simultaneous episodes. It was very well choreographed. Outstanding direction and cinematography! I really enjoyed it and will see it again. |

I liked it. Especially the spitfire storyline. Nice to see the BF109 too. |

A friend saw it and told me not to waste my money as there wasn't much of a battle. I went anyways and it was an unusual chase movie. On the whole, meh. The Spitfire battles were great, however. |

Read the review and see his point, I thought the movie was good and well worth seeing. Certainly it could have been better and in a wider scope. |
Flakbait | 22 Aug 2017 9:59 a.m. PST |
Overall I was disappointed. Number 1 for me believe it or not was the music. It just wore on me. What I enjoyed most where the cockpit scenes of the Spitfire pilots. using chalk on the panel to manage fuel and time. I will leave it at that. |
