Does anybody have any tips for portraying these types of terrain on the table? I need some dry creekbeds for some 15mm minis to hide inside (at a ground scale of about 1"=20yds.) |

I made a duplicate river. Sections of the river bottom are covered randomly with white glue and sand, then painted a different shade of earth and dry-brushed to pick out the stones. The banks have dried grass and the interior is darkened to give an illusion of depth. Scroll down to game 3. dbagora.blogspot.nl Cheers, |

Hi Don, I did my dry rivers for my desert terrain by cutting a shape for the river then putting small rocks and grass around the banks. There are pictures here link Perhaps a few reeds would help for more temperate climates. |

You may be looking for something more 3D and realistic, but I just cut up a bit of old gaming mat and lined the edge with gravel. Works OK for me (and looks better on a proper mat – this one was a fill in!)

If making terrain pieces like Alan showed above, you can also reinforce the notion of a depression by painting it with darker shadows in the "deep" parts and fading that up to lighter colors at the "higher" edges. |

I use GeoHex for my terrain so no problems with 3D terrain issues. |
