"Like most people, for years I have used puffs of cotton batting or stretched out cotton balls to represent ships firing their guns. Not until I started taking pictures of my ships did I realize that this method has some side effects. Said side effect is that quite a few of my ships have little tendrils of cotton or batting hung in the rigging. For whatever reason, I had never noticed it before but it is VERY clear in photos. So, I started looking around for something else to represent that ships were firing their guns…"

Brian,
Dry-brush the side away from the ship with white over the Gray colour. I think that would make them perfect for you. Yes! they do look very good as they are.

I agree with devsdoc! A little white drybrush over what you did already, I think they will look GREAT! Damn fine job there! I always use plenty of stuff like this, smoke, fire, explosions, dead guys, wounded, it all makes the overall effect so much cooler looking IMHO! In our ship games I add small pieces of wood & debris floating around along with lifeboats. Again, it just adds to our gaming pleasure!

Actually, I did wind up drybrushing them with a white/VERY pale gray to lighten them up a bit. I'm also experimenting with using very small plastic rod to give me the gun flashes instead of painting over the pipe cleaner for them. I've also been known to make fallen mast indicators out of pieces of mast that I fouled up during assembly.

What I'm curious about is, of all the stuff on the blog, this caught Armand's eye?

What doesn't? :(

Well, I'd like to think that I've got better looking projects on there than my gun smoke :-/

Great looking smoke, Brian! i can't use them, unfortunately, because ships get too close together in the hexes. I couldn't get those in or out from between the ships. :(

Thanks Sarge. They don't really serve a game function, other than to show that a ship has fired. So they're more for looks than anything else.
