It is my understanding that the Cetshwayo did not want his armies to attack Rorke's Drift. His belief that the battle of Isandlwana was justified as repelling an invasion, whereas Rorke's Drift could be viewed as an offensive action and would therefore be politically disadvantageous.
What do you think would have changed, long term and short term, if his warriors had obeyed orders and not attacked at Rorke's Drift?

Less VC handed out for the Brits.

Same end result. After Isandlwana the fate of the Zulu was sealed.

Even Isandlwana was irrelevant. After Bartle Frere and the Shepstones had decided to invade, the rest was details.

No starring role for Michael Caine in "Zulu".

The Brits were all for destroying the Zulus so there would be no real change.

I agree with the consensus, Rorke's Drift only had value in giving a heroic end to what had been a dreadful day, and allowed the British media to focus on positives.
On the other hand, the foray south of the Mzinyathi (Buffalo) river probably helped maintain the illusion the Zulu intended to expand into Natal.
In the end though, the British would have been hard pushed to lose the war IMHO.
