Did the Ottoman stormtroopers use the same or similar kind of weapons to their German counterparts i.e. LMGs, SMGs, flamethrowers and rifle grenades, etc (in addition to rifles/carbines and grenades)? I'm thinking of adding some to the basic Turkish infantry that I'm painting now because looking at the Emhar infantry set link the less-than-perfect German helmets would do for Turkish ones. I was wandering how many of the figures could just be painted in a sandy-khaki shade or how many would be for head-swaps only. Also, whereas the German stormtroopers were used to test new tactics that their army as a whole went on to adopt, what about the Turks? Did the army as a whole adopt the flexible, modern tactics that the stormtroopers used by 1918? I'm asking because so far my reading has been about Gallipoli and I'd like an idea of how I could develop this project into the later years of the war. |

Ottoman stormtroopers used LMGs but not SMGs or flame throwers. The German army as a whole did not adopt Sturmtaktiken; likewise the Ottoman army. Elements of the tactics, yes, but there were two barriers to widespread and full adoption. The first related to resistance on the part of commanders. Ludwig Renn arrived back from stormtrooper training on the Western Front to be told off by his commander for wearing patches on the knees of his trousers and elbows of his jacket. The second was that the highly specialised stormtrooper and Flammenwerfer units were supported by very heavy concentrations of artillery and close support weapons, the levels of which couldn't be reproduced across the whole army. Thanks for that Robert, very helpful. On the subject of LMGs what types were used by the Turks? The lightened Maxim 08/15s? What about Lewis guns? I imagine that they would have captured some of the latter during the course of their fighting against British and Commonwealth forces. I'm wondering which of the figures from the HaT German Heavy Weapons set link could be useful. |

Around 1500 MG08/15s were supplied to Turkey during the war. There are reports of captured Lewis guns being used, yes. This would have been less common but both figures could be used from the HaT set. Robert |

Right, so that just leaves the rifle grenade and mortars from the HaT set. Any of those used? (I assume that as so few tanks were used in the Middle East – and then in only one battle – the AT rifles wouldn't have been issued.) Speaking of rifle grenades, the pose of the firer and the wooden launcher remind me of some of the trench catapults that I still have to do for my Gallipoli project. Looks like this one set could have two uses . |

Anti-tank rifles were only produced in limited numbers and didn't reach the Western Front until quite late. I don't know for sure but I very much doubt that any were sent to Turkey. Rifle grenades were used for a limited time in the German army on the Western Front. I don't know of any evidence for the Middle East. Robert |

Ottomans using Lewis guns: I was reading the Wikipedia page about the Isle of Wight Rifles and it says that in a trench raid in Palestine link that they captured two of them from the Turks along with an HMG. Lastly, does anyone know if any of the mortars in the HaT German Heavy Weapons Set link would be suitable for the Ottoman army? I've only got Nicolle's MAA book link and it does not discuss the weapons used by the army in any great length. |
