So, im making some Song of Ice and Fire armies with my pals, and, we've been looking at Perry miniatures specificaly, but no matter which box set we look at, be it HYW or War of the Roses, we cannot find any that have these kinds of shields as shown in the picture. Only 2 handed weapons without shields. Would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction of finding these.

The figures look like Perry WOTR but I think the shields are from somebody else.

Possibly this one

Which is kind of silly since with full plate armour you don't need a shield.

Are any of those Fireforge miniatures? They make armored figures and have the heater shields.

Remind me: 'Song of Ice and Fire' is a fantasy work. In fantasy there's no reason why you shouldn't carry a shield with full plate armour?

Of course SOIAF is fantasy. So yes there is no reason why such a fantasy figure can't carry a shield and wear full plate armour. However, it seems that the OP hadn't made that connection when looking at the Perry figures which are of course historical.

I actually really like the idea of plate armour and shields for some soldiers who hold 1 handed weapons (swords hammers etc)

Fireforge do miniatures with those kinds of shields but I don't wanna buy a box of fireforge minis just for the shields and let the bodies go to waste.

In a fantasy setting you could always justify shields with full plate by assuming the full plate is not very good and thus justify the addition of a shield.

Why not ask people if they have any spares they'd care to sell?

Sadsad05 Aug 2017 3:06 a.m. PST

I've actually found a page on the fireforge website which sells plain resin shields and I can put them on some plated troops and just put ASOIAF decals on them. Then again, would like to get some 'Perry' shields as well.

Those Shields are Citadel, the ones they used to supply with the Bretonnian Knights and Men At arms back during 5th edition. I think they came with some Empire and dogs of war troops too…

Shouldn't be too hard to find on Ebay.

ioannis05 Aug 2017 9:10 a.m. PST

Yes, they are Bretonnian shields.

It's much easier when every soldier has the same device on the shield. Note that I didn't say "coat of arms", because they are not. A coat of arms identifies ONE person, while ASOIF lets all the soldiers wear the same sigil. Very convenient for the harassed painter! grin
Having said that, are those Tully sigils decals? Nice.

((Again autocorrect strikes its ugly head. It desperately wants to change "sigil" to "digit". ))

Yes they are Perry's with GW or Fireforge shields. The German company that makes the decals makes them to fit certain shield types so its the shield makers not the figures that are important.

Re representation. Figures are Tullys but using the TV version of their hearldry. Book version would have colors (alternating blue/red with perhaps a "trout" badge) on surcourt. I generally do the "midlands" (ie Tully and Aryn and Frey as Hundred Year War era (say 1350-1400) so you could use HYW Perry figures with shields (esp "foot") for that period. Save the full plate War of the Roses for the South (not Dorne though).

Martin mixes the concept of hearldry and badges – so you can be a bit looser about these concepts. He does not follow the strict rules – causing some weird color combos.

He does try and keep the armor historically correct so I won't mix shields with full plate "because its fantasy". That concept runs very counter to his attempt to do Fantistorical.

In any case happy gaming in Westeros great way to have a War of the Roses campaign with a bit of fantasy variety thrown in – great gift to gamers.
