Well, I just jumped into Star Wars: Armada.
I am really liking it so far.

Which ships should I purchase next after the base set?
Any suggestions?

Thanks!

The cutest ones!

This is Star Wars, you can't go wrong with whichever ones make you want to go "Pew, Pew, Pew!"

That's a big can of worms to open!

However, you have to determine how you want to play. If you want to use fighters, then the ones in the box aren't quite enough. "Rogues and Villians" has some powerful expansions. Other than that buy the fighter expansions for whichever side you want to play.

For Imperials the Victory is hard to win with unless you have some fast ships and a good fighter screen.

For simplicity you might want to go with straight out shooters. The Imperial Star Destroyer is great as well as the Gladiator. The various Mon Cal ships are good too.

It's hard to say what to do next, but I would add a couple of capital ships. Decide which side you want to play the most and just concentrate there.

You need a lot of squadrons. We routinely play with over 16 a side.

Oh yeah, Squadrons. And they're exceedingly cute :3

Spray paint a base colour, add coloured stripes and markings with Micron Art pens, varnish, and they're all done!

Honestly, we enjoy so much better our games with the painted squadrons. Here are a few I have.

Don't frighten the guy off with those beautifully painted miniatures :)

Honestly, the whole relationship between the squadrons and the big ships is one of the coolest parts of the game. However, using the squadrons effectively isn't easy. They are not just extra pieces you get to move around the table. Without support from the big ships in the form of squadron orders they are not going to be nearly as effective.

Just by a bunch of corvettes and ram the Star Destroyers to death.

I think you actually need upgrade cards from some of the other expansions to makes this work as effectively as possible, but it's a very effective tactic.

The meta essentially eliminated fighters from the game for a while (the were cost-ineffective), but they're back. Not sure how you can get 16 fighters into your force with the limits on points allocated to fighters, but maybe they're playing really, really big battles and just buying regular TIEs.

You're correct. We actually use less. More like plus minus 10 squadrons for 300 point games.

the 16 squadrons were for the times we played the campaign with the additional 40 points for defence.
