Today I show you pictures from the Fortress Bourtange in the Netherlands. It is a Vauban like fort, totally reconstructed in the 1960ies and 1970ies.
Have fun with the pictures.

Thank you for sharing. I will add Bourtange to my list of places to visit. Earth bank fortifications seem to be common in the Netherlands. I assume that suitable stone was scarce, although there are brick-faced fortifications (like Naarden).

Outstanding photos! It is a most enjoyable tour of this Vauban fortress. Thank you so much for sharing them.

BTW, it looks like there are private residences within the fortress, is this the case?

Earth fortifications were cheaper and faster to build, and were better at adsorbing shot than masonry faced walls. The down side was they needed more frequent maintenance since those little hills always wanted to level off into the ditch.

If you browse the Netherlands with Google Earth you can find a lot of old town fortifications from the period still existing.
