Recent nostalgic talk about Hinchliffe 25mm and Airfix Plastics makes me realise how far we have moved on. Metal figures now have grown bigger…no matter what the scale…but better, sharper defined, better undercuts etc. Where next? Let us predict what folk will be posting on this forum 10 years, indeed 20 years on. (Strictly Napoleonic, although I was tempted to delve into future wars, influenced by politics which are none of my business, as an EU Irish citizen in the UK.) For sure, anything we say now, will look ridiculous after two decades. After all, we once thought PCs would replace pushing figures around a table and chucking dice. Will technology send us prepainted, 3D sculpts? Will we all wear virtual reality headsets at conventions? Will Front Rank figures reduce their BMI? Will Victrix bayonets be indestructible? Let's have some fun……. |

Their new range, "Fishwives of Hartlepool" with the special "Hanging monkey" vignette. By that time, they'll have done everything else. |

Holographic bases. Roughly 40mm by 30mm (of course, many will disagree on the size). Powered by light-no batteries. Programmed via bluetooth 7, or buy pre-programmed from various manufactures/sculptors. Variable height (2mm to 54mm), variable figure width (hefty, median, skinny). The base weight can also be varied via electro magnets (to be light for shipping and then heavy to simulate lead minis). On special tables, they will actually move at the rate programmed into them (columns move 16 increments, line moves 10 increments). Tap once to change formation, tap twice to move in the direction of the tap, tap 3 times to take a built-in morale test. The deluxe programs will have animation: Touch on both sides to fire, and the guys will fire, reload then return to the ready. Marching guys will shoulder arms and march. The target unit will have guys falling dodwn, clutching their arms, chests, heads. A little digital blood will be splattered. Artillery pieces will recoil, then their crew will roll the piece back into battery, swab out the barrel and reload. The animated ones will be more expensive, of course. |

Do you know what? It could be done……no painting needed either. They managed it in Star Wars for Chewbacca to play…and lose! Brilliant. |

Fast-batch 3D printing of miniatures that can compete with current plastics. Coloured figures might become common. Not just a basic paintjob, but includes shading, facial expressions and numbering. We may see 3D printed metal miniatures that have even better poses without undercuts etc. We will also see the most obscure ranges become available through printing on demand so expect themes like the Thai Burmese war of 1578, the Fishmonger's battle of Delft in 1309 or Kamehameha's conquest of Hawaii. |

I suspect the Perries may be slow to switch to CAD from Greenstuff. It's in their DNA now. I forget which one of them has only one hand, but in 2027 he may have a new prosthetic which exudes ready-mixed Greenstuff. They will eventually retire, but not before, hopefully, having the entire range 3D-scanned and the images sold on. |
