… city will have far-reaching ripple effects, report finds.

"The battle for the city of Marawi in the southern Philippines will have long-term repercussions across the region, according to a report released by Institute of Policy Analysis of Conflict (IPAC).

Well … The only other option was to let them have it and let them turn it into a staging area for more violent attacks on both innocent civilians and government people.

Plus it would have left the civilian population stranded and under the control of violent religious fanatics who would have made their poor lives into a living hell.

"city from pro-Islamic State fighters who want to establish a caliphate."
this sentence is quite ambiguos….from what i know Philippinos both Christian and Muslims are very tollerant and educated people when confronted with extremism (i'm speaking about Muslim extremism) so i think that those cities belonging or not to areas in which islam is the main religion should in any case, when confronted by terrorist, moro rebels ecc..find themselves as hostages …but i read here pro isalmic fighters and caliphate…is it true my perception of the situation or, as in other part of the word (not only in M East/N. Africa countries but also in France and Belgium for example) the muslim people in a certain way support islamic terrorists/rebels?…it'll be very weird for me if that would be the case

My assessment exactly. Filipinos I've met in the US, both Christian and Muslim, have never expressed or shown any tolerance for extremists. I would imagine that people back home would be generally of that same solid caliber.
