Really interesting text, especially about your treatment of yellow.

I was amused by your calling this the "economic Warband level". Tends to suggest not your ultimate standard? Well you managed the double stripe on each girdle, the yellow lace work and very nice saddlecloths. That would do for me!

A very impressive cavalry unit. In these numbers they do look like a regiment

Pffft

Economic Warband level. I wish my best painting standard was half as good as "Economic Warband"

Based upon my decades of painting, I've come to the conclusion that yellow is the worst color to paint. Perhaps you can address the chemistry -- I cannot. But consider Austrian artillery. Ugh! I think it does not cover well but even more than white shows every imperfection and mistake. These look great. The other challenge is the horse blanket edge (sorry, best term I have in my head right now for that). You've taken the approach I have followed for 28mm figures. Really good work. Thanks for sharing.

Fantastic job, and such numbers. And yes yellow is the most work I find!

Thanks for the comments guys! I'm glad you like them. :D

Yes, yellow can be really tricky. It's not that strong of a colour, so you have to go careful. Yellow Ochres or Ochre brown colours are darker yellows (ish) and can cover up any mistakes pretty well.

I do have other standards of work, from level 1 (Warband/Economic), right up to 5. And with everything in between!

OK, come on. Chickens..t

I'll see you and I'll raise you…. a cent.

Show us a 5……if a 1 means a double stripe on the girdle…blimey, that does impress…..Dead Man's Hand (Two pair, black aces and 8's) beats that in any poker game.

5 has to mean eyelashes, stitching on the facings…never mind the lace itself! Seriously, I am jealous…if this is level 1, then you are the sniper in SPR in the church tower. "This guy has talent capt'n"

Haha! deadhead, thanks for the comments, very kind of you. I've put a higher level figure below, and take a look on my website for some other photos:

Oh yes………

Royal Flush then. Not sure whether Cardigan or Blucher are my favourites. Blucher for the face, Cardigan for the rig.

saved a few pictures to copy the shading/highlights on the horses.

thanks

Yellow pigment in acrylic colours has always been a prob, unless you either a. use yellow ochre with a highlight of the same plus white mixed in, or b. turn to Humbrol yellow , and use that, just for facings, etc. – it's got more pigment and really stands out.

For yellow, try Pelikan Plaka casein paints. Their yellow Ochre is perfect for Austrian artillery carriages etc. The highest covering power of any water based paint.
