Gentlemen, I am looking for a set of rules for Baccus 6mm Napoleonic's. I want something that uses about 3 to 5 bases for a regiment. I have the Severed Union rulebook for the American Civil war and want something similar for Naps. Suggestions?

Someone has to ask: 3-5 bases to a British single-battalion regiment? A Prussian 1812 regiment of pushing 3,000 men in three battalions? Give us a few more hints.

Not familiar with Severed Union rules, but wouldn't Conliffe's Shako or Neil Thomas' Napoleonic Wargaming work for you? I used to own the original Shako. Played it a few times and liked the concepts. Neil Thomas' setnisndefinitey simple and fast play but look to be fun. I enjoy playing his ancients and 19th century rules.

Hi Bob:

Since in the ACW a regiment and a battalion were mostly the same thing, I read this to mean:

A Napoleonic rule set in which battalions are 3-5 bases or so. Fortunately there are plenty to choose from.

Any set of rules will work with 6mm. Figure scale is irrelevant unless you use figure removal. Otherwise a base is just a counter, the figures just make it pretty. One 28 ora dozen 6's the game will play the same.

My "rules directory" page might help:

Take a look at:

Le Feu Sacre would certainly work.
Principles of War uses (IIRC) 4 stand units.
Lasalle uses 4-6 stand units.
March Attack is 2 bases/battalion
Piquet: Field of Battle uses 4 stand units

Black powder would work well too

You can use Baccus/Polemos' "Ruse de Guerre", meant for the North American H&M wars, where each base is a company now instead of a battalion or regiment.

Find the rules you like to play (and can play locally or at conventions) and then adjust them to your basing – nowadays there is usually no adjustments needed anyway.

Thanks guys. Mark, you are right, I meant battalion. I'm probably going to use Shako.

Base your troops on 20mm frontage stands. They will be adaptable to almost every rule set out there. If you base on stell, you can cut movement trays out of sheet magnet in a trice for different rule sets.

There is no way a set of rules can simulate everything in a Napoleonic battle. So the first questions is what do you want to simulate – then find rules that simulate those factors.

BTW I play Commands & Colors which has 3 to 5 bases to a unit using Baccus 6mm. It's a fun and quick game.

I would also recommend Black Powder Rules. Hope it helps.

As always, comments are appreciated.

Take care

Our group uses slightly modified Black Powder

I would submit to you that simulating Napoleonic tactical conflict is not about bases per unit, but the frontage they represent, and the subsequent ability of that frontage (and depth) to deliver unto the enemy, by hand or fire. Carnage & Glory computer rules do this best. No need to re-base-but an imperative need to think like a Brigadier in all tactical situations. You will enjoy your battles on a fine level.
