Well, Hcon 2017 is over and I'm really going to miss Fredericksburg. We had a great show……..tons of great games and I walked away with soon good loot. Hot, but a great experience as always. I'm not clear on the hot references. Are people saying it was hot inside the venue? |

Ah! So they DID have historical miniatures at Fredricksburg. After the last few reports, I was starting to wonder. Thanks for sharing. Terrain looks great. Glad everyone seems to have had a good time. And don't count out the FCC yet. All up to the Board, but I keep seeing it as the place Cold Wars ought to try. |

Actually….I thought temperatures inside the venue were very comfortable……the weather outside was typical Virginia July weather……between 95 and 100 degrees most days. Walking back and forth to the hotel was nasty…. |

Robert: I surely hope that HMGS does not try to do a Cold Wars in Fredericksburg unless it is moved to very late in March or early April. A snow storm hitting NOVA (when it snows in Lancaster it often snows in NOVA), will shut down the show. Virginia shuts down in snow (not as bad as localities further south) and the amount of equipment to remove the snow is not the same as further north. While Cold Wars has survived many snow storms in PA (better removal and people used to driving in snow), I am afraid that it would be a total loss if hit by a VA snow storm. |

Thanks for posting – couldn't make it this year so it is nice seeing the pics and good write-up. |

Good point, BTC. I have long suspected that Fairfax County VA doesn't actually own any snow removal equipment. They just slapped magnetic stickers on the West Virginia stuff when West Virginia was done with it. But I remain unconvinced that you'd suffer a net loss in terms of weather no-shows by moving the convention 150 miles south and putting it practically on top of I-95. If we want any HMGS-East show that far south, the one most prone to bad weather seems like the obvious candidate. |

Robert: I understand the thoughts of moving the winter show south, but it is just not far enough south to avoid weather issues. The last snow filled Cold Wars dumped on most of Virginia (so much so that we went up a day early to avoid the weather). Virginia counties and cities seldom own any equipment (although some towns and cities do). The majority of snow removal is by VDOT and their independent contractors. They tend to clear the main highways and then get to the side roads later (I have seen side roads covered for days until they have gotten to them). When I was firefighting, the challenge was that we had to leave chains on our trucks to get into the side roads/subdivisions, but the main roads were clear. Always caused a problem. I will never understand VDOT's snow removal procedures. |

BTC--that would be Cold Wars 2015? Yeah. I lost a car on that one. But I was trying to get up VA 15 from Herndon. I think I'd have made it headed east on four-lane roads and south on I-95, and the same for everyone coming in from the north on the Pennsylvania Turnpike or headed south on I-95. Those are the roads VDOT would have cleared. I am not an advocate for the FCC. There are a couple of things I don't like about the venue, and even if I liked it, Lancaster is (just barely) a one-day trip from my home in Fort Wayne, while the FCC means an extra road day each way. But if Historicon is losing attendance there, and we want to maintain a convention at the southern end of the HMGS-East range, I would think Cold Wars a slightly better call than Fall In. Still, it's not going to be my call. |

Robert, using that logic wouldn't Fall-In be a better candidate? At least if there is winter weather during Cold Wars, it is being held in a state that can handle it. |
