For wargaming purposes it is interesting to speculate on what tanks Americans would have been using in the First World War if the war had gone on for another year or so.
The Ford Three Ton Tank was just getting put into production when the war ended. The US Army did get a few to France and there are photos of them being used as towing vehicles. It was not great as a tank, but perhaps it could have replaced many of the horses and mules towing wagons. With Model T engines it was mechanically reliable. In the event, the M1917 tank series was produced and many did make it to France.
At the other end of the spectrum was the Steam Tank; a massive vehicle powered by steam engines. It carried four machine guns and most importantly, a flame thrower. It could shoot fire nearly 100 feet.
Finally, the most important tank was the International Liberty MK VIII. About 100 of these saw US Army service until 1932. They were put into mothballs and retained until about 1940. These tanks were just not quite ready when the war ended.
I think an interesting wargame could be had with MK VIII tanks, supported by flame throwing Steam tanks, using M1917 for light work, and the Ford 3 Ton to tow light artillery.
