The answer to the question of the title may not be that obvious. Armies are hirachies. Two platoons fighting is more figures but is not a bigger battle. A company is bigger, there are more decisions to be made. As an example at that level the company commander has to deploy additional supports and who gets that control. Which platoons are up front and who is behind. By the time you get to battalion level it gets harder. You may have to decide not only who gets the battalion level supports and when but potentially, which company is in reserve and even logistics of who rests when, if more than a few hours are involved, potentially setting up re arming points. The higher in the command the bias becomes towards logistics. If you use everything now what will you do in 8 hours if a counter attack comes. So there's my interpretation of what a big battle involves, is that how you see it?l |

Well, sure, the higher up you go the more you have to worry about the allocation of assets. You still have the same issue (but at a smaller level) with one or two platoons because the CO needs to determine squad placement, and allocation of support weapons. The more figures you put on a table, the more decisions you have to make. |

I believe there are a finite number of things that you can attend to. The larger the battle ( higher ranking you are) the flavor of what those things are changes from very tactical to operational. Once you hit battalion level you have a staff to help you because though you are responsible for more things there are still a finite number that you personally can attend to. Gamers of course don't have a staff. I believe I recall you have military experience so am not sure I understand your question. Any battle I am involved in is a "big battle" to me! Cheers Joe |
