He was not the King of Sweden but rather its Crown Prince …. the agreement was that his offspring would become the Kings … |

After 1809, Bernadotte had had enough of Napoleon. He basically turned against Napoleon somewhere around then. That he was not wanting to commit the Swedish army has to do with the losses they suffered in The Finnish War of 1808-09. Bernadotte was not facing Napoleon at Grossbeeren or Dennewitz. Bernadote has his own plans… to be the next King or Emperor of France… and also… he want to fight against Denmmark because of Norway… not so much against the French… Amicalement Armand |

'The Crown Prince of Sweden (renegade Bernadotte) acted as if he were merely reviewing the besieging troops during the armistice; but he deliberately rode as near as possible to the fortification that he former soldiers, whom he still fancied to be attached to him, could see him. Suddenly a cannon shot was fired from the fortress and the ball whizzed past Bernadotte's ears. The allies at once raised a protest against this breach of the armistice. But the commander at Stettin answered: 'A French deserter was in sight, and the guard shot at him. This was all.' -Napoleonic Anecdotes by Louis Cohen, 137. |
