I know that there are some great guides on line and youtube, but I'm looking for a book on advanced painting techniques. I can't afford Dallimore's Master Class which is currently over £180.00 GBP on Amazon second hand. Can anyone recommend an alternative? Many thanks

I've seen that book. It has lots of stuff, but unless you want to paint in 30 styles I'm not sure it's the key to success. Most of the basics, and some, are freely available on line. After that it's the 10,000 hours that actually makes you any good.

IMHO

Have a look at this

Valero, Javier Gomez, Painting Wargaming Figures, (Pen & Sword Military, 2015)
Javier Gomez Valero is a professional figure painter who paints under the name of "El Merciano". His book explains techniques for painting wargames figures including very useful highlighting and shading guides using the popular Vallejo Model Colour paints.

There's a GW/Citadel book floating around that should be reasonable secondhand, I saw it for $18 USDCDN at a convention recently.

I have the Javier Gomez book and I like it a lot. I think it's well worth purchasing.

I simply can't believe no one mentioned Shep Paine's Painting Military Miniatures. It is a classic.

Try the Painting War series. Period specific but with useful general guidance. Www.Breakingwar.com.

If it still takes you to no where, just google search Sorastro's Imperial Assault videos That should give you the various tutorials he does.
