I'm considering raising Byzantine and Sassanid armies again. Use to play Tactica and really enjoyed the tension, always came down to the wire. But wondering if anyone can suggest rules that seem to give a good feel for these two opponents. |

We use Armati 2, which is an evolution of Tactica. Our games almost always come down to the wire. |

It's funny. As long as those rules have been around I've never seen a game played. Always heard good things about them but |

I don't know if it was on the To the Strongest forum or not but there was an AAR of a game with this rules set using those armies. It was a close fought thing. TtS is an excellent set of rules for ancients or medievals. Our local groups loves it. We play Republican Romans v.s barbarians (mostly melee infantry) and also Mongols v.s Sung Chinese (a lot of cavalry and movement) and the rules work well for all styles. |

Our group plays and average of 35+ games of Armati 2 a year, from biblicals to Medieval and Early Renaissance. We had two games last Thursday, Roman civil war and Sung Chinese vs Mongols. |

Tactic and Armati are great games as is To the Strongest. At Partizan last year there was a large To the Strongest game of Sassanids vs Late-ish Romans. Two blog reports with great photos: link link |

These armies play really well in Mortem et Gloriam. |

Don't know about rules, but "Beyond the Golden Gates" (WAB) is my favorite wargaming book, and I don't even have miniatures for it. |

I would recommend Hail Caesar Rules. Hope it helps. As always, comments are appreciated. Take care Andy |
