Over the past few years I've bought a number of 6mm Napoleonics collections. So my project for the summer is to sort them out and get them all based for Grande Armee (pocket scale). That means 30x30mm stands for each unit (brigades). I'll also be using them for various other rule sets, starting with Et Sans Resultat which I've been wanting to play for a while.

Here is the collection:

If you are looking for more painted figures I have a load of Adler French I'm looking to off load.

I feel your pain – I am in the middle of rebasing two Austrian Corps in 6mm

@Frostie: Thanks but all my stuff is Baccus. Not really an Adler fan.

@Frederick: Step one is labeling what I have done. Step two is basing all the loose, unbased figures. Step three is re-basing everything on the wrong size bases. Good 3 month work here I think.

I'll be posting pictures regularly! First up will just be to sort and ID the stands that are already based to my new standard (30x30mm).

@Frostie,

I could be interested depending on what you have.

Not to worry – I always have plenty of troops for both sides (in a pinch we could press a little SYW infantry in to the game if we had to evil grin).

So part one: these units are (mostly) based correctly. I just need to ID each base and write on the bottom what they are. That will at least let me sort them by type/nationality so I can get a handle on what I have! Then I'll move on to unbased, and re-basing last.

holy moly
how many figures per base are you going to use?

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP26 Jun 2017 3:29 p.m. PST

Oh, EC, SURELY you're not going to rebase anyone? Just remember that "ANY basing can be used with ANY rules."

I look forward with great anticipation to battle reports the first time you use these armies for Grant's "The War Game" "Charge!" or "In the Grand Manner."

Kidding aside, an impressive collection. Congratulations. For what it's worth, especially in microscale, I often find it helpful to color code the back edge of the base by nationality as well as writing unit designations underneath. It helps steer everyone toward the right pile or the right box, and then you can fine sort as necessary. Somewhere around 3mm or 1/8" you can sometimes get away with writing the unit designation on the base edge--visible to the commander without being conspicuous in photos.

@Barcephus: Between 16 and 30, it depends (on how many I have, mostly!).

@Robert P. Well played. evil grin But I'm not re-basing because my rules demand it. I'm doing it because I like my bases to look uniform (to a point). Some of these are on 3mm ply and will remain so. Some are on 1.5mm ply. I am debating marking systems but will probably paint the back edge as you suggest. I may do two colors: one for nation (Austrians = white, French = Blue) and a second for unit (not specific but just so you can tell if commands are intermixed). We'll see….

Barcephus27 Jun 2017 6:24 a.m. PST

man…
I swore id never get into another scale…

GRRRR…what should I start with? LOL

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP27 Jun 2017 7:20 a.m. PST

Barcephus, I love the H&R, but be warned they're substantially smaller and will not blend with Adler or Bacchus. Irregular are cheap and great service, but lack a little in detail, and you either love or hate the multiple-casting molds. Try if you can to see a few of each before you decide.

Once you pick, buy two minimum armies as fast as you can afford to. And be sure the bases are big enough to handle. Yes, you can put put four 5mm infantry on a 3/8" by 1/2" stand, but that doesn't make it a good idea. I have done down to 20mm, and there's nothing wrong with EC's 30mm.

Thank you EC. I still want to see you do Grant's "War Game." Or "Charge!" The man to man melee system alone should be worthy of Rube Goldberg or Heath Robinson.

@Robert Piepenbrink: Thanks for the advice

@Extra Crispy: is there any specific time period you would be thinking of?

@Barcephus: You need to come by the shop and take a look at my armies.

Maybe they decided to do the 1812 campaign?

It will be getting pretty interesting about now…

This looks like a very interesting project, considering doing something very similar.
