A friend has a number of 1/2 inch thick MDF they are willing to part with but it's almost a two hour drive each way to pick them up. Just wonder if something like that is useful for hobby purpose? Is 1/2 inch too thick to cut and work with easily? Is it too thick to use as a terrain base? What could you do with it? Thanks. |

I could probably kill a man with it if I needed to… 1/2 inch seems too thick to work with. You could probably use it as a base for hills. |

Hi Never turn down free stuff. 1 You can uses a table saw and make walls for forts/Buildings 2 Cut out river shapes and uses a router to cut river/ Water Features. 3 Make a nice storage box for terrain or figures 4 makes a nice top for a war game table. |

Terrain tiles, boxes or drawers to store supplies in – such as smaller terrain pieces, mats, loose trees and the like. It could be used to make simple buildings if you don't want to have any interior. Probably not suitable for scatter terrain unless you want to make thick hills or mesas by laminating it into thicker pieces. You should look at a few woodworking sites and/or YouTube for some tips on putting MDF furniture together. For tools you will probably need a jig saw or circular saw, one or more drills and suitable drill bits, a sander of some sort. It would a really good idea to work outside or otherwise away from your regular living areas because of nasty, fine dust that will be generated. |

There would have to be a lot of it to be worth driving for four hours…. |

I made a gaming table out of 1/2 ins MDF. 4 sections each 2 x 6 which slot together on a frame so that I can put it in top of any table and play. That's just one idea. |

I was assuming the OP meant scraps of MDF. If it's full sized pieces a modular table is the way to go! |

A tabletop would be the best. I made mine out of 1/2MDF, the stuff is heavy. |

Base of hills with carved pink/blue foam on top was my first thought too, assuming it is scraps. |

I used 1/2 MDf to make a series of 3 4x4 table- it is very heavy. If you are making a games table you don't plan on moving (ever) then go ahead and grab it. For my current project I am using 3/8 plywood which is much lighter. |
