I'm building a squadron of prussian uhlans but they came without lance. How tall should they be? They are 28mm figures.

Oliver Schmidt22 Jun 2017 4:53 a.m. PST

The Prussian lances in the 1812 to 1815 campaigns were 10 feet 6 inches [3,285m] long, including the 6 inches [0,16m] iron lancehead. Their diameter was 1 inch [0.026m]. (Prussian feet and inches.)

Boys against men, in more senses than one! I had not realised the scale difference before.

Checked this out in my various ref books but…and no surprise…all data refers to French..and even then I have 7.5 ft up to 9ft in most (I do not do metres …or meters….despite being Irish and still a citizen of the EU)

But 10.5 ft…wow. Cossacks, they always say, were better equipped, lengthwise and painted theirs red….

But it is not all about dimensions, it is about your skill and stamina to simply carry on long term. So I have often been assured.

Mollinary's comment is well made also. The Prussians up against the Polish Garde Lanciers look like something out of LOTR….dwarves against Urakhai! I always though FR mixed OKish with Calpe and had planned that for my next project……….

Not so sure now

Yes, Front Rank are BIG figures, even though Calpe are large.

How tall should they be?

No taller than the box you want to store them in.

Said he, having learned the hard way.

I think the scale difference isn't as great as it appears in that photo, but rather the size of the hats the light trim rather than dark colour of uhlans skews the perspective?

Nice figures anyway!! :)

Thankst for the answers! :)

Thanks Marconz! When I get some time I will take a pic of some Fremch Lancers and Calpe Uhlans side by side.

Being a Prussian uhlan is very much like making love to a beautiful woman…

jfominiaturepainting23 Jun 2017 6:36 a.m. PST

I finally equiped them with 6cm lances.

Is there any information about regimental/squadron flags for them? I haven't found anything about that… :S

wrgmr123 Jun 2017 8:50 a.m. PST

The only Prussian cavalry that carried flags were Dragoons and Cuirassiers.

Here is a size comparison photo starting from the left:
Front Rank French Lancers
Calpe Prussian Uhlans
Foundry Austrian Lancers
Elite French Chassuers

I didn't paint the French Lancers, picked them up on E-bay and added some detailing, changed facing colors etc.
My apologies for the picture quality, blue base etc, did this on the fly.

I wish we could see more of such comparisons, to see works with what. That is very useful and thanks

von Winterfeldt23 Jun 2017 12:07 p.m. PST

very long lances for the French – I was always under the impression that they had quite short ones.

wrgmr123 Jun 2017 2:13 p.m. PST

Von W, I realized that when I received them, however that's the way I bought them from E-Bay, and honestly too lazy to fix! That and there are too many other projects in the que. Maybe I will fix these as I'm almost finished my Prussians.
Cheers,
Thomas

French….von W…. it was always thus.

Russia, never quite the same again.

9ft approx everyone (except Jouineau who insists only 7ft 6 inches) gives for French lances …so, 1/56 scale is….?

wrgmr123 Jun 2017 7:15 p.m. PST

Deadhead, considering the average lancer was what 5'6" or 5'7", a lance a 7' 6" lance would be only 2' longer then the man was. Admittedly easier to handle than a 9 footer, and longer than a sword or sabre barely, at 45", if the lancer is holding the exact middle for balance. Does that give him an advantage against an uhlan with la lance stretching out 54"?
I guess it depends on experience.
