I follow Herman Wouk in granting Spruance a Triumph (not just an Ovation; chariots, captive enemy in chains; the whole 9 yards). And I also breathe a sigh of relief that Halsey was laid up in the hospital for the battle. |

I'm glad to see the article referenced in the OP takes into account recent Historical analysis, such as that of Lundstrum. The old school historians (like Morison and Wouk) were sometimes overly influenced by WWII-era navy politics. MH |
