Thank you Tango! Just a stray comment: I have heard it said but could not confirm that the FFL in Syria had an unusually high percentage of pre-War German recruits and White Russian exiles. Even apart from the conviction that their loyalty was to the government of metropolitan France (i.e. Petain and Vichy) they'd be understandably less prone to join the Free French than former Spanish leftists.

(Incidentally, some of those Spaniards eventually did wind up in Indo-China, and some captured at Dien Bien Phu and elsewhere, stayed with the Communists. I remember news reports when the last of them went home to Spain in the 1960's.)

Yes, interesting incident where Free French FL fought Vichy FFL during the UK/Allied invasion in '41. Of Vichy Lebanon and Syria.

Some of the German memebers got recruited back into the German Army – I remember somewhere a reference to them in the Africa Corps.

Yes, about 300 were "recruited" to the 361st Inf Rgt, 90th Light Div., DAK. link
