Not that we have any say in the matter. You don't have to give any reasons, nor do you have to be consistent. The Cruel Sea. The Battle of the Atlantic was so grim, it SHOULD be in bkack and white. And Jack Hawkins is perfect. The Man Who Would Be King. Could the capstone any better? Showgirls. It never should have been made in the first place, let alone a remake. This is possibly the worst big budget ever made. "It's so bad it's great!" Why tamper with perfection? |

Lawrence of Arabia. I'm currently reading a seven hundred page biography. Although the film conjoins a few separate incidents to further Lawrence's story and character (in the film the guy rescued from the desert is later executed by Lawrence for a blood feud murder – historically they were two separate guys and the incidents are in the wrong chronological order), I have to say that the film captures both the essence of the man, his contemporaries and the theatre of operations (one or two incidents are made up to capture the brutality of this war and the cruelty of the nature of the desert). I doubt, in a film of this length, more could be done to further our knowledge. |

Begs the question, was a remake ever better than the original? Special effects get better with time, but not always the writing. And cultural attitudes and prohibitions change; i.e. couldn't possibly remake Mel Brook's Blazzing Saddles in today's politically correct world. |

Re-imagining/re-booting/remaking doesn't bother me. I enjoyed the new BSG series, for example. It's when the story gets gutted, the themes diluted, the characters caricature-ized and the budget is blown on wizz-bang CGI rather than good writers that it's disappointing. |

Just wondering how many people who complain about the remakes have actually watched them. The Magnificent 7 remake is not that bad a movie, certainly better than the sequels. The Italian Job is entertaining, and if it hadn't used the same name it would not have attracted the level of hate it did. Some would benefit from being remade due to modern technology, and better writers/cast. |

Maltese Falcon Rio Bravo 13th Warrior The Big Sleep Vertigo His Girl Friday Magnificent Seven Zulu Split Second (The Rutger Howard one) The Wind and the Lion Patton (But someone might CGI in the right tanks.) King Kong Note that several of these WERE remakes. Once you get it right, stop. And I'll admit to watching El Dorado more often than Rio Bravo. But the current crowd has mangled too many movies for me to have any trust in their judgment. |

The Monster That Challenged the World (a.k.a. The Jagged Edge and The Kraken) is a 1957 black-and-white science-fiction monster film from Gramercy Pictures, produced by Arthur Gardner, Jules V. Levy, and Arnold Laven (who also directed), and starring Tim Holt and Audrey Dalton.[1] The film was distributed by United Artists on a double bill with The Vampire. The film concerns an army of giant mollusks that emerge from California's Salton Sea. Mollusks aka snails. |

The Magnificent 7 remake is not that bad a movie It's pretty good – saw it at the cinema. After the not so great reboot the Planet of The Apes series has been very good – because it added a credible new level to the originals. The most recent version of Far from the madding crowd was very good indeed. I admit that mostly I prefer new stories and new films – in recent years there have been some great films. Trumbo, Jackie, Arrival, Grand Budapest Hotel. And some pretty good films – Monument Men, Their Finest (both WWII movies, but from a different angle), Slow West ( a very different kind of western). Some would benefit from being remade due to modern technology, and better writers/cast. And if they redid good scripts that had originally been saddled with a bad cast then I'd have no problem with it. But salvaging a duff film is a harder task than reshooting an accepted masterpiece. Some remakes are worthwhile – and many more are "meh". IMHO. |

I don't know. Maybe a musical production of Citizen Kane in living color with a CGI sled? Generally, just about any movie, no. If your writers and producers can't come up with original works, fire them. |

There have certainly been instances of remakes that were better than the original. But, in those cases, the original was no better than mediocre, whether due to script, director, or the leading actors. When a movie is really great, an accepted classic, I prefer that it be left alone, as it is extremely unlikely that anyone can make a new version that is even acceptable, let alone improve on it. So, if somebody wants to try a remake of "Heaven's Gate," then go for it; but PLEASE, no more crap like the latest couple of versions of "The Three Musketeers." |

USAFpilot--yes, certainly some remakes have been better. The Humphrey Bogart Maltese Falcon was the third. The trick is stopping once you get it right. As for new technology--certainly for sound. Arguably for color. For special effects, I'm a harder sell. My working theory is that every million dollars in special effects reduces the writing budget by 1% until somewhere around $100,000,000 USD in special effects you have no plot, characterization or dialogue. True surprisingly often. As for what OUGHT to be remade, top of my list is The Conqueror, where a very decent script was ruined by miscasting. I'd also love to see a Major Dundee closer to the original script, which was a lot more Peckinpah-ish than what Peckinpah actually filmed. |

Don't give a rip. Only thing worse than a bad remake is people thinking that bad remakes cheapen the original in any way. I mean – even bad remakes kept someone (a lot of someones) employed for a while. |

Begs the question, was a remake ever better than the original? Yes. The Bogart version of Maltese Falcon is far superior to either of the previous versions, one of which was silent. A SILENT movie of a Dashiel Hammett story??? Isn't that akin to a silent musical or a silent Marx Brothers movie? As for movies that should never be remade: Cocoanuts Animal Crackers Monkey Business Horse Feathers Duck Soup A Day at the Races At the Circus Go West A Night at the Opera Room Service The Big Store A Night in Casablanca |
