"Turkey's decision to send up to 3,000 troops to Qatar further cements their growing ties, but it virtually eliminates a possible role for Ankara to mediate between Qatar and the Gulf states that have decided to isolate it for alleged support of terrorism. Both countries have found themselves increasingly isolated Turkey for the increasing authoritarian rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Qatar for its alleged financial support of extremist groups and growing ties with Iran, the main competitor to Saudi Arabia for power and influence in the region. Qatar denies the allegation…" Main page link Amicalement Armand

He's going to protect an Ikhwan (Muslim Brotherhood) partner? Why else? :) Erdogan has to make sure there are no records of Turkish money and Syrian (ISIS) oil changing hands. And, if things go badly, he can always say he was only there to liberate all the foreign "workers"*. Dan * There are only about 250,000 real Qatari citizens there. Many of them have never worked a day in their lives. The rest (about a million people) are "paid" foreign workers who are hardly ever allowed to leave. The country's motto should be "you can check in any time you like, but you can never leave". |

"The country's motto should be "you can check in any time you like, but you can never leave"." Hey, I remember that hit song from the 70s; Hotel Qatarfornia – The Turkeys (or some other kind of bird?!?) |

I think the Eagles appropriated the Qatari line and tweaked it a little for their song. Another original Qatari phrase was "slaves check in, but they can't check out", but Roach Motel stole it and used it as their main product slogan. Those poor Qatari royals, always getting ripped off by the West. And now we are pressuring them to destroy their perfectly balanced society: link So maybe Erdogan will play the Moses or Lincoln and collapse the Qatari economy by releasing all those workers from bondage. He'll probably gain favor throughout the Muslim world for being the great liberator. They might even forgive all his other transgressions. An excellent PR opportunity, if you ask me. Dan TMP link |

Don't worry guys, I am assured FIFA had strict language in their awarding of World Cup 2022 that no dead slaves would be built into the stadiums. |

One word, Incirlik. Combined with our base in Qatar and it shows we suck at picking out base locations. |

I wonder how many of the "Taliban 5" and the other GITMO inmates we sent to Qatar are still there, being faithfully watched by the Qatari government as they were supposed to? :) Seeing as how the Qatari government has been laundering opium money for the Taliban and others for decades, my guess is none. I bet not one detainee is left, and I bet anything that Erdogan helped with their quiet relocation out of Qatar and back to the front lines. Dan |

That dirty money has gone everywhere. The thing is … the Saudis have been doing the exact same thing. This could just be the first domino to fall. If Wikileaks is to be believed … here is something about a report from August 2014: "we need to use our diplomatic and more traditional intelligence >> assets to bring pressure on the governments of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, >> which are providing clandestine financial and logistic support to ISIL and >> other radical Sunni groups in the region." link Dan PS. So, it seems like the fates of Turkey, Qatar and the Saudis might be tied together.
