I took my first steps into modern skirmish gaming with a solo run-through of the Skirmish Sangin 'Recon Patrol' scenario (pp. 142-144). My version saw a fire team of marines cut off in a village with disastrous results. I'm only using basic rules and very new to modern skirmish gaming, but have published a (slightly wordy) AAR 'A bad morning in the Sangin valley' on my blog if you are interested. link
Looking back, I enjoyed the game immensely, although it seemed quite slow to play. I like the (almost) role playing aspect the SS rules give, though. |

We played a few multi- player games of SS last year. Although I am not usually a fan of games after WW2, these games were enjoyable. The need to extract wounded can be very restrictive on NATO forces, but is quite realistic. |

Alan, what did you think of the rulels? I have a copy, but them seemed to be a bit complex. |

Agree, Steamingdave47, the change of mission once the ISAF have wounded (was KIA in this case)is very challenging – but agree its realistic. Was hard to find rules on how to handle it – probably there somewhere. This is my first venture into modern – usually WW1 is as late as I go. It was a tough scenario for the marines – I though their firepower would get them through, but the RPG was a game changer. nnascati – yes, I found them a bit complex but it was a first run through and completed over many days – so didn't get into a flow. I find the activation and firing mechanic fairly strait forward once you get your head around it – just so many incidental rules that come into play and these case a lot of rule book checking. I find using pdf on a tablet helpful for searching up rules easily. I would like to have a go at Force on Force as a comparison – just got to fork out the cash! |

Alan, Tried SS and found then a bit too detailed for my taste. I enjoy FoF. You can try the rules for free here: link After I did I bought them with confidence. Welcome to modern skirmish! Joe |

Hi Joe, Excellent, I didn't know about the quick start rules – having been thinking about FoF for a while but even for a PDF they are pretty pricey and would prefer the hard bound. Thinking back on my first go at SS, it was the rather laborious issue of who activated in each phase that slowed it down. Yes, much detail! Thanks mate! Alan |

Alan, My skirmish gaming go to is actually a mix of FoF and Combat Patrol. I use FoF for morale, TQ checks, armor resolution and special rules. I use Combat Patrol for activation (brilliant it is) and combat resolution. I have added my own leadership rules which Buck is testing out. It is too bad Buck and Shawn couldn't get together and market "Combat Force". It is the perfect skirmish game for me. Of course for my campaigns I use Platoon Forward! ;) Again welcome Joe |
